Swaziland convicts S.African for bomb intended for king

A Swaziland court convicted a South African man of high treason and terrorism Wednesday over a botched bomb attack against King Mswati III.

High Court Judge Bheki Maphalala found Amos Mbedzi guilty of planning to plant the bomb at a bridge of the Lozitha Royal Palace in the commercial hub Manzini in 2008.

It was intended for Africa's last absolute monarch, who was due to use the bridge the same night, but the bomb exploded prematurely in the car Mbedzi was travelling in.

Mbedzi survived with serious injuries while two others in the car were killed.

The judge also found Mbedzi had been part of the Umbane People's Liberation Army, a secret militant group linked to the People's United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), which sought to undermine elections that year until Swaziland allowed a multi-party vote.

Political parties were banned in 1973 and voters choose candidates approved by traditional leaders and the king.

A series of small bomb blasts rattled the country in 2008, with Umbane claiming responsibility for the attacks.

Following the botched attack, the state proscribed PUDEMO and several activists went into exile.

King Mswati III has faced increasing protests in the last few months as the kingdom weathers a severe economic crisis, partly blamed on his lavish lifestyle with his 13 wives.

Authorities have resisted increased demands for democratic reforms, the latest an almost two-month long teachers' strike which has died down in the last two weeks.

Mbedzi underwent training at Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of South Africa's ruling African National Congress, when it was still fighting the white minority regime under apartheid. He is also a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

The SACP's branch in Mbedzi's home province Limpopo, vowed to fight for his release at the beginning of August.

"There are no prospects of justice being meted out by the courts of that land in so far as (Comrade) Mbedzi's trial is concerned," the party said in a statement.

He will be sentenced on September 5.

Wrongful Termination Lawyer of Orange County

August 29th, 2012 by admin

Sexual harassment is a sensitive and serious issue. If you have ever been victimized by someone at work, you should contact a Wrongful Termination Lawyer in Orange County.

California law defines sexual harassment as ?unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.?

Consider the following sexual harassment example:

Say you are a young female who has been working at a natural gas company for a few years. As a junior chemical engineer, you work closely with a senior engineer who is an older male. Over the years the two of you have gotten to know each other well. Recently, your male co-worker revealed he has broken up with his long term girlfriend. A few days later, you are horrified as your co-worker makes an unusual proposition. He asks if you will come to his apartment once a week to fulfill his sexual needs to exchange for high marks on your next bi-yearly work evaluation. He tells you that this could be the push you need to be promoted with a higher salary. You immediately say no, but the following week you are harassed on a daily basis by inappropriate nude pictures from your co-worker via text with reminders about the upcoming work evaluations.

Now say that later, your co-worker ends up writing a false work evaluation on you and as a result, you are fired. This would be grounds for wrongful termination and you should contact Wrongful Termination Attorney in Orange County for a consultation.

Curiosity rover plays first song transmitted from another planet

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? For the first time in history, a recorded song has been beamed back to Earth from another planet. Students, special guests and news media gathered at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., today to hear "Reach for the Stars" by musician will.i.am after it was transmitted from the surface of Mars by the Curiosity rover.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden addressed the crowd in a video message encouraging students to study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). "Mars has always fascinated us, and the things Curiosity tells us about it will help us learn about whether or not life was possible there," Bolden said. "And what future human explorers can expect. will.i.am has provided the first song on our playlist of Mars exploration."

In opening remarks, NASA Associate Administrator for Education and space shuttle astronaut Leland Melvin said, "I can think of no greater way to honor NASA pioneer Neil Armstrong's life and legacy than to inspire today's students to follow his path. That first footprint that Neil placed on the lunar surface left an indelible mark in history. Perhaps one of our students here today or watching on NASA Television will be the first to set foot on the surface of Mars and continue humanity's quest to explore."

Musician and entrepreneur will.i.am shared his thoughts about "Reach for the Stars" becoming the first interplanetary song and an anthem for NASA education. The entertainer is a well-known advocate of science and technology education. He said, "Today is about inspiring young people to lead a life without limits placed on their potential and to pursue collaboration between humanity and technology through STEAM education. I know my purpose is to inspire young people, because they will keep inspiring me back."

After completing a journey of more than 700 million miles from Earth to Mars and back, the opening orchestral strains of "Reach for the Stars" filled the auditorium. The event added to continuing worldwide interest in Curiosity's mission.

NASA engineers spoke to attendees about the Curiosity mission, and the systems engineering and orbital mechanics involved in getting the song file back from Mars. Students had the opportunity to ask questions of all program participants. Earlier in the day, students received a guided tour of JPL to view rover models and learn about STEM career options.

During the event, will.i.am's i.am angel Foundation and Discovery Education announced a $10 million classroom education initiative that will reach 25 million students annually, including many from underserved communities. Focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) educational themes, the Discovery Education initiative will incorporate NASA content and space exploration themes as part of the curriculum.

The event will be replayed on NASA Television. For schedule information, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.

Can You Learn While You're Asleep?

iStockphoto.com

Research suggests basic forms of learning are possible while snoozing.

If you're a student, you may have harbored the fantasy of learning lessons while you sleep. Who wouldn't want to stick on a pair of headphones, grab some shut-eye with a lesson about, say, Chinese history playing in his ears ? and wake up with newly acquired knowledge of the Ming Dynasty?

Sadly, it doesn't work. The history lesson either keeps you from going to sleep, or it doesn't ? in which case you don't learn it.

But researchers may have taken the first baby step to making the fantasy come true: In an unusual experiment published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers Anat Arzi, Ilana Hairston and others showed that people are capable of learning simple lessons while fast asleep.

?

The researchers sprayed volunteers with pleasant and unpleasant smells while they were fast asleep. Exactly like people who are awake, the sleeping volunteers took bigger breaths when there was a pleasant smell and a smaller breath when there was an unpleasant smell.

The researchers also paired each kind of smell with a particular sound. After repeated pairings of, say, a pleasant smell with a high-pitched beep, the researchers played the high-pitched beep without the smell: They found the volunteers took a big gulp of air. At least subconsciously, in other words, they were expecting the pleasant smell.

The researchers similarly paired an unpleasant smell ? rotting fish ? with another kind of tone. After repeated pairings, the tone alone caused the volunteers to take a smaller breath.

The phenomenon is known as conditioning, a simple form of learning made famous by Ivan Pavlov and his dog.

When the volunteers woke up, the researchers played the different tones to them. They found that the high-pitched beep caused the volunteers to take a big breath and the low-pitched beep caused the volunteers to take a small breath.

In other words, the conditioning lesson learned while the volunteers were asleep stayed with them after they awoke. Interestingly, the volunteers had no conscious recollection of having learned anything while they were sleeping.

Hairston said the research could help unlock the effects that sleep has on different brain processes. It's been known for a while that a nap can help cement things you've learned; Hairston said the sleep mechanisms that consolidate knowledge may explain why volunteers in the current experiment were able to bring what they learned during sleep into waking hours.

Practical applications of the conditioning technique are still far off, of course. But speculating about potential future uses, Hairston said: "A medical student can learn a list of body organs. You can perhaps pair different organs with smells. So you pair the thalamus with the smell of lemon, and the hippothalamus with the smell of orange blossom. When you wake up, you will have a better recollection of that list!"

Prehistoric tiny bugs found trapped in amber

This undated handout photo provided by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the University of G?ttingen shows photomicrographs of the two new species of ancient gall mites in 230-million-year-old amber droplets from northeastern Italy. (AP) ? Scientists have found three well preserved ancient insects frozen in amber ? and time ? in what is Earth's oldest bug trap.

The discoveries of amber-encased insects in Italy may sound like something out of "Jurassic Park" but these bugs are even older than that. They are about 230 million years old, which puts them in the Triassic time period, and about 100 million years older than what had been the previously known oldest critters trapped in fossilized tree resin, or amber.

Gooey tree resin is like sap but without water and can't be diluted.

Researchers painstakingly examined 70,000 droplets of amber found in northeastern Italy. Stuck in them were two microscopic mites and much of one fly. The mites are too small to be seen with the naked eye and the fly is a tad tinier than a fruit fly, researchers say.

The discovery was reported Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While older insects have been found in rock fossils, these are different because they are not compressed and better preserved, said study lead author David Grimaldi, curator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. And you can see more detail, he said.

"''That's the great thing about amber. You can make this incredible detailed comparison with living species." Grimaldi said.

And when Grimaldi compared the ancient mites to their modern day descendants, he was surprised about how similar they are. Except for difference in the mouth and fewer legs, "they're dead ringers for (modern) gall mites," he said. The modern ones can be found in bubbles or galls on plant leaves.

And that's surprising because the world itself has changed a lot from when these bugs were alive. Back then, there was only one giant continent, some early primitive dinosaurs and no flower plants. Mites now live on flowering plants, but their ancient relatives must have stayed on trees, Grimaldi said.

Derek Briggs, director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History and who wasn't part of the research, called the bugs' discovery tantalizing, adding that it could help researchers further understand how life evolved on land.

Storm lashes Florida, delaying Republican convention

Tropical Storm Isaac lashed southern Florida Sunday and was expected to become a hurricane after forcing a one-day delay to the main events of the US Republican convention.

With winds reaching 65 miles (100 kilometers) per hour, the storm brought rain and choppy seas to the Florida Keys after battering Haiti and sweeping across Cuba late Saturday, the Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Florida Keys and parts of the state's southwest coast, and the Republican Party announced that severe weather warnings had postponed the start of its four-day gathering in Tampa.

According to the adjusted plan, the gathering will nominally open Monday and then immediately adjourn to reconvene on Tuesday, when the weather is expected to clear up.

Early Sunday, the eye of the storm was around 80 miles southeast of Key West, Florida and it was moving northwest at 18 miles per hour, with forecasts suggesting it would strengthen over the next 48 hours, the NHC said.

In its 11:00 am (1500 GMT) advisory, the NHC said Isaac was expected to be at or near hurricane strength as it passes over the Keys and predicted "hurricane conditions" there and in southwest Florida.

After sweeping across the string of islands off Florida's southern coast, the storm is on track to churn through the Gulf and make landfall Wednesday in Louisiana or Mississippi.

Tens of thousands of Republicans will be in Tampa for speeches, parties and the formal nomination of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney as the candidate to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told CNN the decision was motivated by concern for delegates traveling in buses over long bridges and the difficulty of erecting tents to shelter security lines at venue entrances.

He insisted, however, that the show would go on, saying: "We're 100 percent full steam ahead on Tuesday."

Thousands of convention delegates are to stay in hotels along a coastal barrier island, which is likely to bear the brunt of the storm, and a decision was to be made on Sunday over whether to move them to higher ground.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a Democrat, had earlier sought to calm jitters about the weather, saying the storm might bring heavy rain to Tampa on the first of the four-day convention but would be followed by sunny skies.

"There may be wet shoes, but every day after Monday ought to be fine," Buckhorn told Fox News on Saturday.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a trip to Tampa and other Florida cities because of the approaching storm, Obama's Democratic campaign said.

And in the Gulf of Mexico, BP evacuated its Thunder Horse platform, the world's largest offshore production and drilling facility.

Isaac was near hurricane strength early Saturday when the eye of the storm passed over Haiti, where hundreds of thousands of people are still living in squalid, makeshift camps following a catastrophic 2010 earthquake.

An eight-year-old Haitian girl died when a wall collapsed at her home and a 51-year-old woman died when her roof collapsed, according to officials, who later said two other people had also died in the storm.

More than 3,300 families had been evacuated to temporary shelters ahead of Isaac as aid groups provided clean water and hygiene kits to try to limit the risk of contaminated water and the spread of disease.

Cuba declared a state of alert in the island's six eastern provinces, where nearly five million people live, and evacuated around 5,000 foreign and local tourists from beachside hotels.

The State Of Social Media Customer Service - Business 2 Community

If you have read any of my previous blog posts, you know that I have a weakness for online shopping. One of my favorite shopping sites is Rue La La (I actually write about the company here). I have spent an embarrassingly large sum of money on clothes, shoes, accessories, and home goods, and I am always satisfied with the products and the service I receive from Rue. However, I recently bought a pair of shoes (some pretty styling leather slingback pumps), and after two brief wearings, found that the shoes were noticeably damaged. I sent a message to Rue La La customer service via the website, explaining the situation and hoping for credit, or if a customer service rep was feeling generous, a refund. I figured this was wishful thinking, as I had already worn the shoes.

However, less than two hours after sending my message, I received a response from a Rue La La rep apologizing and instructing me to send the pumps back for a refund.

This personal email is, to me, the quintessence of good customer service.

Earlier today, I was perusing the Rue La La Facebook page, and I noticed that many people used Rue?s Facebook wall to praise the site for high-quality merchandise they received, ask questions, or voice a complaint. Rue La La responded to nearly every post in a timely manner, and they directly addressed disillusioned customers by offering them a specific solution.

Now, I chose to seek customer service directly through Rue?s website, but other people used social media to solicit a response. I actually thought about posting on the Rue La La wall, but I figured that I would have a better chance of receiving a response through the comment form on the site. But, clearly Rue La La doesn?t discriminate when it comes to customer-service-related inquiries: they address all comments and complaints quickly and efficiently, regardless of where these comments originated. This actually surprises me, because I have witnessed numerous times companies outright ignore wall posts.

So, I started thinking about companies that deliver customer service through social media. Was I right in believing that businesses are more apt to address complaints via email than via Facebook or Twitter? Also, what specific businesses skillfully integrate customer service into their social media campaigns?and which ones fail at attending to their disgruntled, displeased, Tweet-happy, Facebook-happy consumers? I think that providing customer service through social media channels is kind of like communism or McKayla Maroney on vault: it?s great in theory, but easy to slip up on the execution. Is this viewpoint accurate?

Summer 2012, Steinbeck Style

Apparently, the summer of 2012 is the Summer of Our Discontent (shout out to all you literature nerds who understand this Steinbeck reference!) when it comes to brand-consumer interaction via social media. While gathering research for this post, I Googled ?social media customer service.? Here are a few of the results on the first page of Google News:

It looks like social media screw-ups by major brands are more common than ?Call Me Maybe? covers, and news of these social media gaffes spreads faster than the People magazine?s presumably frantic attempts to get all the details on Jennifer Aniston?s engagement, find some way to tie Angelina Jolie into the mix, and get the story to press by Wednesday.

These Google search results make it seem that brands still don?t have a handle on social media, but these are only one part of the picture. To get the whole picture, I sought out some research.

The Research on Social Media Customer Service

Who?s Offering Social Media Customer Service:

  • A recent survey looked at 400 companies in the U.S. and the U.K. and found that 59% of companies use Twitter for customer service.
  • 60% use Facebook.
  • 56% of companies implemented services in response to customer requests. (Source)

Who?s Using Social Media Customer Service:

  • One in five customers (17%) have used social media once in the past year to get a customer service response. (Source)

Now while it seems that only a minority of people use social media for customer service, this number is actually deceiving, because social-media-savvy consumers are very vocal and engaged.

The general population is willing to pay 13% more at companies that provide great service. Social-media-savvy individuals are willing to spend 21% more. They?re also invaluable when it comes to word-of-mouth marketing: they tell 3x as many people about their positive experiences compared to the general population.

However, the engagement of social media savvy customers can also work against companies. These customers are vocal about positive experiences, and they?re outspoken about negative ones as well. 55% of the general population has walked away from a purchase because of poor customer service. 80% of social-media-savvy consumers have abandoned purchases because of a bad customer service experience. Also, they tell 2x as many people about negative experiences compared to the general population.

Clearly, people who use social media are valuable customers, not only because of the money they spend but also because of their tendency to broadcast their experiences?both the good and the bad. I would argue that courting the favor of these consumers is a wise investment. The problem is that many companies fail to meet the expectations of consumers.

  • 25% of people who complain about brands through Facebook or Twitter expect a response within an hour. (Source)
  • Only 44% of top retailers respond to customer service questions within 24 hours! (Source)

Now, Rue La La might be an exception to this, as they respond to all of the comments on their Facebook wall very quickly. Maybe I could have posted on the company?s Facebook wall instead of submitting a form on the website and been pleasantly surprised at the timely, friendly response. But, I think the fact that I?m skeptical of companies? ability to readily deal with any type of feedback (whether positive or negative) addressed to them through a social media outlet is well-founded. Actually, when companies like Rue La La respond to people, I?m shocked because I expect virtually nothing from businesses on Facebook and Twitter. How did I become such a social-media cynic? Through occurrences such as these:

A Serious Social Media Faux Pas by Progressive

The family of a woman killed in a car crash wrote a blog post (and sent out some tweets) that criticized Progressive for fighting to avoid paying a claim. After the blog post went viral, Progressive tried to address complaints through Twitter. This is the problem:

Progressive sent out automated responses; consequently their sympathy and/or respect for the ?tragic case? seems completely non-genuine. They claim to care about the case, but this claim appears to be disingenuous and insincere due to the fact that they sent out completely generic, copy-and-paste tweets. They took a bad situation and made it worse. Now, this isn?t customer service per se; however, part of being able to deliver customer service through social media is knowing how to converse with consumers. Progressive either doesn?t know how to engage in a company-consumer dialogue, or they seriously faltered in this case. Now, I know this is just one example, but I think it?s part of a larger trend.

Consider this: CNBC recently talked about the world?s most ?liked? brands on Facebook, so I decided to look at the 15 most-liked brands and see how engaged they are with customers and if they provide any sort of customer service. 12 out of these 15 brands closed their walls, so fans don?t even have the option of voicing a complaint or asking a question (unless they choose to do so by commenting on a post). Only two brands responded to comments/questions/complaints (nice job, Victoria?s Secret and Target).

Going Viral and Cramping Companies? Styles

As I was writing this post, I considered the following: why should companies offer social media customer service? McDonald?s doesn?t; Starbucks doesn?t; Coca Cola doesn?t. All of these companies are doing well financially (obviously), and all of these companies have closed their wall to Facebook comments. A company?s success is not dependent on its ability to deliver customer service through Facebook or Twitter. However, in our social-media-saturated society, I think a company has to be meticulous about delivering quality service because of the concept of virality. Because of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and blogs, content spreads faster than Liz Lemon inhaling a sandwich while in line at Airport Security. This can be great when businesses do something right: a man recently addressed a Facebook post to Panera, thanking Panera for providing his grandmother with her last meal. The post went viral, and it currently has 731,654 likes. This kind of attention is like free positive publicity.

However, virality can also be free negative publicity. Progressive?s Twitter gaffe is one example. United Airlines received a whirlwind of negative press when news broke that the airline ?lost? a 10-year-old passenger. United also gained some not-so-desirable attention when someone had his guitar destroyed by United?s baggage handlers. The airline repeatedly refused to pay for the damages, so the passenger wrote a song called ?United Breaks Guitars.? It has been viewed over 12 million times on YouTube.

And I can?t forget to mention the oh-so-popular video of a FedEx delivery man throwing a package that contained customer?s computer monitor over the gate of the customer?s home.

My Ode to Rue La La

To bring this blog post full circle, I?ll return to the topic of Rue La La. Given the fact that many brands do not yet have a handle on social media customer service, the fact that Rue La La addresses complaints posted on their Facebook wall is impressive.

Perhaps I?ll take a cue from ?United Breaks Guitars? and make a video praising Rue La La. To maximize the chances of it going viral, I?ll need one guitar and some cats.

Or maybe just one cat?the Nyan Cat.

How A Cute Little Critter Can Be A Big Problem

Squirrels may be cute with their little bushy tail and sweet eyes, but behind those cute squirrel eyes is a scavenging little pest that will mess up your yard, bird feeder and hide out in your attic. That's when it's time to call someone for squirrel removal in Oklahoma City OK. A professional can help you get rid of squirrels once and for all and keep them in the trees where they belong.

Squirrels should not be hanging out in your bird feeder, under your porch or in your attic. They can make a lot of noise and can carry a strong odor especially when they relieve themselves in your home or attic. They may look cute, but they are truly disgusting, disease carrying animals that are best left in the woods.

There are some things you can do while you wait for a professional to come and get rid of your squirrel problem. If you find that squirrels are digging up your vegetable garden or flowers, put up a fence. If the fence is at least 8 inches in the ground, that can keep the squirrels from digging underneath to get in. You can also try a squirrel repellent for your garden. Just pick some up at any feed or garden store. Results of these products can vary so use at your own risk. If you find that squirrels are getting into your bird feeders, there are squirrel proof feeders you can buy that have a weight sensor on them and can tell if something larger than a bird is on the feeder. It may send a light shock or close the doors to the feeders if it senses a squirrel is on the feeder. If you find that none of these things are helping to get rid of squirrels or keeping them off your property, contact squirrel removal in Oklahoma City OK and have a professional come out and trap the squirrels and relocate them.

You can find many professional wildlife removal companies that can come out and assess your situation. They can help you find out the reason for your infestation. It may be that you have food laying out in the open or that your trash cans are not tightly sealed. You may have pet food out and that can attract squirrels and other animals as well.

Hiring a professional is probably the easiest way to fix your squirrel problem. Contact a company that handles squirrel removal in Oklahoma City OK and get rid of your unwanted pests for good.

Squirrel removal Oklahoma city OK - Critter Control of Oklahoma City provides animal control & wildlife management services including rat, squirrel, skunk, raccoon, opossum, possum removal & pest control services.

Mayberry Jr. lifts Phillies past Reds in 11th

By ROB MAADDI

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:18 p.m. ET Aug. 23, 2012

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Charlie Manuel sounded like a prize fighter who went the distance. And the Philadelphia manager didn't even play.

John Mayberry Jr. hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night.

In a game that lasted 4 hours, 24 minutes, the Phillies squandered opportunities in the ninth and 10th before getting a key hit to split the four-game set. They took over sole possession of third place in the NL East for the first time since April.

"I feel like I was in a fight, and I lost," Manuel said. "I feel drained. I kept waiting for somebody to come home."

Todd Frazier drove in all three runs for the NL Central-leading Reds, who were seeking their first series win in Philadelphia since 2006.

Kevin Frandsen led off the 11th with a single against Alfredo Simon (2-2), and Chase Utley followed with a double. After Ryan Howard was intentionally walked, Domonic Brown hit a bouncer to first that caused Frandsen to be forced out at home.

Mayberry then grounded a single to left to end it.

"The series was like playoff action," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

Raul Valdes (3-2) worked a scoreless 11th for the win. Philadelphia's bullpen pitched five hitless innings.

"It was phenomenal," Mayberry said. "Everybody threw the ball extremely well."

In a matchup between NL Cy Young Award contenders, neither Johnny Cueto nor Cole Hamels was sharp. Cueto was trying to become the first 17-game winner in the majors. The dreadlocked righty allowed two runs and five hits in five-plus innings.

Hamels gave up three runs and six hits in six innings. He remained unbeaten against the Reds. The lefty entered 8-0 with a 1.26 ERA in 10 previous starts, including a five-hitter to finish off a sweep in the 2010 NL division series.

J.J. Hoover pitched out of trouble in the ninth and 10th. Hoover retired Brown on a double-play grounder with the bases loaded to send the game to extra innings.

"Things like that happen, but we came up with a tough win," Brown said.

After Jimmy Rollins hit a double to put runners on second and third with one out in the 10th, Hoover got Brian Schneider on a grounder to third, and Juan Pierre on a popup to third.

Down 3-2, the Phillies rallied in the eighth against relievers Sean Marshall and Sam LeCure. Brown, Mayberry and Erik Kratz hit consecutive one-out singles to load the bases. Rollins then hit a shallow fly to left. Brown scored ahead of Ryan Ludwick's off-target throw to tie it at 3.

Despite bright skies, it rained hard in the first inning. The Reds loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk. Frazier drove in a run on a groundout to third for a 1-0 lead. Phillies shortstop Michael Martinez then saved a run with a spectacular, diving grab on Miguel Cairo's grounder in the hole and made a strong throw to get the out and end the inning.

Hamels seemed a bit perturbed by the downpour and asked the grounds crew to work on the mound during the inning. He also appeared upset that Frandsen didn't throw home on Frazier's bouncer, throwing his hands up in the air.

"I was frustrated starting the game when it rains," Hamels said. "I don't think it should ever happen. They have radar detectors."

The defense let Hamels down again in the sixth.

After a leadoff single by Jay Bruce, Ludwick ripped a wicked one-hopper to Martinez, who couldn't handle the ball. It was ruled a hit, though it could've been a double-play grounder. Frazier followed with a double off the base of the wall in center, and the ball bounced back through Laynce Nix's legs. Two runs scored for a 3-0 lead, and Frazier advanced to third on Nix's error.

The rain stopped by the second, but the field was a little spongy for a few more innings.

Phillies right-hander Phillippe Aumont, acquired from Seattle in the original Cliff Lee trade in December 2009, pitched a scoreless eighth in his major league debut.

NOTES: Cueto leads the NL with 12 hit batters. ... Reds C Devin Mesoraco was reinstated from the suspended list and sent to Triple-A Louisville. ... Frazier has an eight-game hitting streak. ... The Phillies optioned RHP Michael Schwimer to the minors to make room for LHP Jeremy Horst, who returned from paternity leave. ... The Phillies extended their deal with Class-A Lakewood of the South Atlantic League through 2014. ... The Phillies open a three-game series with the NL East-leading Washington Nationals on Friday night. Kyle Kendrick (6-9) pitches the opener. ... The Reds return home to open a three-game set against St. Louis. Mat Latos (10-3) starts Friday.
