British film director Ken Russell dies at 84 (AP)

LONDON ? Ken Russell, an iconoclastic British director whose daring films blended music, sex and violence in a potent brew seemingly drawn straight from his subconscious, has died at age 84.

Russell died in a hospital on Sunday following a series of strokes, his son Alex Verney-Elliott said Monday.

"My father died peacefully," Verney-Elliott said. "He died with a smile on his face."

Russell was a fiercely original director whose vision occasionally brought mainstream success, but often tested the patience of audiences and critics. He had one of his biggest hits in 1969 with "Women in Love," based on the book by D.H. Lawrence, which earned Academy Award nominations for the director and for writer Larry Kramer, and a "Best Actress" Oscar for the star, Glenda Jackson.

It included one of the decade's most famous scenes ? a nude wrestling bout between Alan Bates and Oliver Reed.

Reed said at the time that the director was "starting to go crazy."

"Before that he was a sane, likable TV director," Reed said. "Now he's an insane, likable film director."

Born in the English port of Southampton in 1927, Russell was attracted by the romance of the sea and attended Pangbourne Nautical College before joining the Merchant Navy at 17 as a junior crew member on a cargo ship bound for the Pacific. He became seasick, soon realized he hated naval life and was discharged after a nervous breakdown.

Desperate to avoid joining the family's shoe business, he studied ballet and tried his hand at acting before accepting he was not much good at either. He then studied photography, for which he did have a talent, and became a fashion photographer before being hired to work on BBC arts programs, including profiles of the poet John Betjeman, comedian Spike Milligan and playwright Shelagh Delaney.

"When there were no more live artists left, we turned to making somewhat longer films about dead artists such as Prokofiev," Russell once said.

These quickly evolved from conventional documentaries into something more interesting.

"At first we were only allowed to use still photographs and newsreel footage of these subjects, but eventually we sneaked in the odd hand playing the piano (in `Prokofiev') and the odd back walking through a door," Russell said. "By the time a couple of years had gone by, those boring little factual accounts of the artists had evolved into evocative films of an hour or more which used real actors to impersonate the historical figures."

Music played a central role in many of Russell's films, including "The Music Lovers" in 1970 ? about Tchaikovsky ? and 1975's "Lisztomania," which starred Roger Daltrey of The Who as 19th-century heartthrob Franz Liszt.

"The Boy Friend," a 1971 homage to 1930s Hollywood musicals starring supermodel Twiggy, and Russell's 1975 adaptation of The Who's psychedelic rock opera "Tommy," were musicals of a different sort, both marked by the director's characteristic visual excess.

Russell's darker side was rarely far away. "Dante's Inferno," a 1967 movie about the poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, played up the differences between Rossetti's idealized view of his wife and her reality as a drug addict.

Russell was even more provocative in his 1970 film "The Dance of the Seven Veils: A Comic Strip in Seven Episodes." It presented the composer Richard Strauss as a crypto-Nazi, and showed him conducting Rosenkavalier waltzes while SS men tortured a Jew.

"The Devils," a 1971 film starring Vanessa Redgrave as a 17th-century nun in the grip of demonic possession, was heavily cut for its U.S. release and is due to be released on DVD in Britain for the first time in 2012.

Russell told The Associated Press in 1987 that he found such censorship "so tedious and boring." He called the American print of "The Devils" `'just a butchered nonsense."

Critics were often unimpressed by Russell's work. Alexander Walker called him a master of "the porno-biography which is not quite pornography but is far from being biography." Pauline Kael said his films "cheapen everything they touch."

But admirers luxuriated in his Gothic sensibility ? on display once again in "Gothic," a 1987 film about the genesis of Mary Shelley's horror tale "Frankenstein" replete with such hallucinatory visuals as breasts with eyes and mouths spewing cockroaches.

Russell said his depiction of a drug-addled Percy Bysshe Shelley was an accurate depiction of the time.

"Everyone in England in the 19th century was on a permanent trip. He must have been stoned out of his mind for years," Russell said. "I know I am."

Russell's fascination with changing mental states also surfaced in 1980 film "Altered States," a rare Hollywood foray for him, starring William Hurt as a scientist experimenting with hallucinogens. It was poorly received.

Later films included the comic horror thriller "The Lair of the White Worm" in 1989, which gave an atypical early role to Hugh Grant as a vampire worm-battling lord of the manor.

Russell also directed operas and made the video for Elton John's "Nikita."

Married four times, Russell is survived by his wife Elise Tribble and his children.

Funeral details were not immediately announced.

GOP Latinos face questions over immigrant pasts (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is forced to research and clarify her late grandfather's immigration status. Marco Rubio, Florida's GOP Senator, is accused of embellishing his family's immigrant story. A Republican congressional candidate in California puts on his website that he is the great-grandson of an illegal immigrant.

As more Latino Republicans seek and win elected office, their families' backgrounds are becoming subject to increased scrutiny from some Latino activists, a reaction experts say is a result of Latino Republicans' conservative views on immigration. It's a new phenomenon that experts say Latino Democrats rarely faced, and could be a recurring feature in elections as the Republican Party seeks to recruit more Latino candidates.

"It's a trend and we are seeing more of it," said Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles.

For years, most Latino elected officials were largely Democrats, except in Florida, where Cuban Americans tended to vote Republican. But recently, a new generation of Latino Republicans has won seats in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, California and even Idaho. Those politicians have come under fire from some Latino activists for pushing for laws targeting illegal immigrants and for opposing efforts for comprehensive immigration reform ? views that are in line with most Republicans.

And the immigrant advocates are pointing to the GOP Latino elected leaders' own family histories in an effort to paint them as hypocrites. Ignacio Garcia, a history professor at Brigham Young University, said it comes from a long tradition by liberal activists of portraying Latino Republicans as "vendidos," or sellouts, since the majority of Latino voters tend to vote Democratic.

For example, Martinez tried twice in the New Mexico state legislature to overturn a state law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain state drivers' licenses. Then earlier this year, various media outlets reported that a grandfather of Martinez may have been an illegal immigrant. The reports sparked immigrant advocates to protests outside the state Capitol with poster-size photos of Martinez on drivers' licenses.

Martinez, a Republican and the nation's only Latina governor, ordered her political organization to research her family's background and found documents that suggested that her grandfather legally entered the country and had various work permits.

The episode drew criticism, even from those who opposed Martinez' efforts on state driver's licenses. "This has nothing to do with her views and how she governs," said Michael A. Olivas, an immigration law professor at the University of Houston who also is aiding in a lawsuit against a Martinez's administration probe over the license fight. "I don't think it's fair for people to dig around in her family's past."

In Florida, Rubio's official Senate website until recently described his parents as having fled Cuba following Fidel Castro's takeover. But media organizations reported last month that Rubio's parents and his maternal grandfather emigrated for economic reasons more than two years before the Cuban Revolution.

Somos Republicans, a group dedicated to increasing Latino Republican voting numbers, immediately attacked Rubio over the discrepancy and for holding harsh views on immigration. "We believe it is time to find out the complete history of his parents' immigration history," the group said in a statement. "It is also time for Rubio to be a leader and help Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) fix the broken immigration system."

Patricia Montes, executive director of Centro Presente, an immigrant advocacy group in Somerville, Mass., said voters need to know a politician's family background for clues on how they will respond to people with similar stories. "It's very important to voters," said Montes.

Montes said most Latino and immigrant voters don't simply view Latino Republicans as "vendidos" but rather as politican leaders who don't share their views. "I don't care if someone is Latina or not," said Montes. "I care if they believe in the same things I do, and if their policies will affect the immigrant community."

Garcia said the current tension also is a result of a new breed of Latino Republicans finally winning high profile seats after years of being largely ignored or dismissed. Garcia said there have always been Hispanic Republicans, through their numbers have been typically small and they have often faced heat from the largely Democratic Latino population.

In New Mexico, for example, the colorful lawman and lawyer Elfego Baca helped establish the Republican Party just after New Mexico became a state in 1912 and actively tried recruit the state's mutigenerational Latino population to join the party. Baca won a number of local offices, including district attorney, but lost bids for Congress and various statewide offices.

In Texas, civil rights activist Felix Tijerina, a Mexican-American Houston restaurateur and former national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens in the 1950s, remained committed to Republican Party despite a backlash from fellow activists who disagreed with his laissez faire, pro-business views. One Texas civil rights leader, John J. Herrera, called Tijerina "a white man's Mexican" for his support of Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower for president over Democrat Adlai Stevenson.

"The difference now is that these new Latino Republicans, like Martinez and Rubio, are better prepared and are being groomed as national figures," said Garcia. "Meanwhile, the Democrats are falling behind. They have no equivalent and they aren't giving Latinos the same opportunity."

Garcia said there's also a new factor ? the millions of new independent Latino evangelicals who could be potential GOP voters. This population is new and unpredictable, he said.

Still, some Latino Republicans want to use the new attention around them in the party to change what they say is damaging rhetoric around immigration. Tony Carlos, who is seeking the GOP nomination for California's 3rd Congressional District, is running on a platform to push comprehensive immigration reform and believes if other Republicans follow, more Latinos will vote with the GOP.

On his campaign website Carlos says his great-grandfather came to Arizona from Mexico "without papers." Carlos said it's all about showing that his family is part of an ongoing American story and that political leaders need to honestly attack today's problems.

"I'm putting my family history out there. And once Latino voters hear that I support immigration reform, I find that they are open to other issues that appeal to conservatives," said Carlos. "My argument is that they are just as conservative. They are just in the wrong party."

(AP) ? The Arab League is set to vote Sunday on sweeping sanctions against Syria, which could include halting cooperation with the nation's central bank and stopping flights to the country.

The 22-nation body will vote on the recommendations at the group's headquarters in Cairo.

If the Arab League were to go ahead with the move, it would be a huge blow for a regime that considers itself a powerhouse of Arab nationalism.

Syria is facing mounting international pressure to end the bloody crackdown on the uprising against President Bashar Assad, which the U.N. says has killed more than 3,500 people. The European Union and the United States have imposed several rounds of sanctions against Assad and his regime, including a ban on the import of Syrian oil.

Don't Take Your Eyes Off Mistras (The Motley Fool)

Mistras Group (NYSE: MG - News), which provides technology-enabled non-destructive testing solutions, recently reported better-than-expected results for the first quarter with profits surging a whopping 103%. Let's take a closer look at the impressive numbers.

Rise and fall
Revenue increased by 34% to $91.4 million due to increased demand for inspection services along with an increase in "run and maintain" or "evergreen" contracts. Advanced non-destructive testing services, which have higher margins than traditional NDT services, also increased noticeably over the last year. NDT services are basically analysis techniques to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system cost-effectively and without causing damage. Increased growth of 40% from targets other than oil and gas also added to the revenue.

Oil and gas contributed 56% to the top line, down from 61% in the same period previous year. Gross profits decreased because of lower margins associated with the energy sector caused by longer contracts and a high concentration of traditional NDT services. When it came to new contracts, the company was not able to command prices, which may lead to lower margins in the short term. However, Mistras put a sizable effort in improving gross profits by focusing on utilization rates of its service technicians, controlling other costs of revenues, and introducing more advanced NDT tools to its services segment.

The net effect on the bottom line was a whopping 103% increase to $3.2 million, primarily due to an increase in revenue. The growth could have been higher but was stymied by higher selling, general, and administrative expenses. These were borne from infrastructure- and acquisitions-related costs.

Is it just Mistras or is it an industry trend?
Although the three-digit growth was not felt across the board, peers didn't do badly either. Team (Nasdaq: TISI - News) put up a good show in its last quarter with a 78% increase in net income. Furmanite (NYSE: FRM - News) also experienced a 98% increase in the bottom line. This shows that the industry is going through a strong positive trend.

And this is a big advantage for Mistras as it is well-positioned as a "one source asset protection solution" provider for its customers. In other words, it is like a one-stop shop. This should assist the company in further enhancing its top line.

Mistras, which earns a major chunk of revenues from the oil and gas industry, has many midstream and upstream companies as its clients. This particular sector is poised for huge growth given the high natural gas reserves around the world and the demand associated with it. The impending expansion should also increase opportunities for Mistras' services.

What's cooking?
Mistras Group has shown a strong uptrend through its top-line growth. The company's positioning as a one-stop shop within the target market has the potential to maintain the growth momentum. Given that it can market its services well, I believe it is worth keeping an eye on.

New bodies could bring Ohio Craigslist toll to 3 (AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The discoveries of two new bodies could bring to three the death toll from a Craigslist ad that police say lured victims into a lethal robbery scheme.

A body found Friday in a shallow grave near a mall in Akron may be that of a missing man who answered the ad, the FBI said. And a sheriff in a rural county said later in the day that the body of a white male without identification was found in a shallow grave about 90 miles away.

The FBI is working on the supposition that the body found near the Rolling Acres shopping mall in Akron may be that of 47-year-old Timothy Kern, who hasn't been seen in more than a week, agency spokeswoman Vicki Anderson said.

"Do we think it might be? Maybe," Anderson said. "He's missing. We haven't been able to find him. It could possibly be, but we just don't know that yet."

Anderson declined to specify how authorities discovered the body.

Kern, of Massillon, answered the same ad for a farm hand that authorities say led to the shooting death of Norfolk, Va., resident David Pauley, 51, in a rural area of Nobel County 90 miles south of Akron. A South Carolina man reported answering the ad and being shot Nov. 6 but escaping.

Noble County Sheriff Steve Hannum is under a judge's gag order and can't comment on the case, but the title of his emailed announcement late Friday ? "second body" ? implied the discovery was connected with Pauley's death.

Neighbors where Pauley's body was found last week and the second body was found Friday said police had been in the area and a helicopter had been overhead most of the day but the scene was quiet late in the day.

Two people from the Akron area are in custody: a high school student who has been charged with attempted murder and 52-year-old Richard Beasley, who is in jail on unrelated charges.

Beasley's mother has said he has "a very caring heart" and she prays that newspaper reports he is a suspect are wrong.

FBI agents have contacted people to check on their well-being, FBI spokesman Harry Trombitas said Friday in an email.

One was Heather Tuttle, of Ravenna, who applied for the job Oct. 7 but never got a response. She had forgotten about the posting until an FBI agent called and left a message for her Monday.

When she called back, she was stunned at what the agent told her.

"It could have been me," said Tuttle, 27, who has since taken work as an assistant manager at a gas station.

"When the situation was explained to me, it just instantly made me sick and made me realize how lucky I am that I didn't get a response back," she said.

Another man who responded to the ad has said he met Beasley at a food court at a different mall in the Akron area on Oct. 10. Ron Sanson, of Stow, was told the man was looking for an older, single or divorced person to watch over a 688-acre farm in southeast Ohio ? the kind of man, Sanson said, whose disappearance might not be quickly noticed.

Sanson and Kern are both divorced. So was Pauley.

Sanson, 58, said he filled out an application and talked for about 20 minutes with Beasley about a $300-a-week job overseeing a swath of land a mile from the nearest neighbor and living rent-free in a two-bedroom trailer with opportunities to hunt and fish and free access to ATVs and snowmobiles.

The farm advertised on Craigslist does not exist; the area where the bodies were found in Noble County is property owned by a coal company and often leased to hunters.

Law enforcement officials have released few details because of the gag order. Hannum, the sheriff in Noble County where Pauley and the South Carolina man were shot, previously said it was unclear how long the ad was online or whether there were other victims.

BlackFriday-walmart

Ten minutes before the?Porter Ranch Walmart opened in Los Angeles,?California, a mother of two used a can of pepper spray to attack other shoppers waiting in line for the early, Black Friday door-buster sales according to the Los Angeles Times. The woman was specifically looking to get the $100 discounted price on a Xbox 360 as well as a few Xbox 360 games. With both children in tow, she began spraying other customers as soon as the store employees started pulling packing plastic off the discounted items. Once the doors opened, the woman also used the pepper spray to gain a favorable position over other customers competing for items. A witness at the attack posted on Twitter that customers were screaming about stinging eyes.

Holiday ShoppingLos Angeles firefighters and the LAPD responded to the attack quickly and treated?20 injured customers that suffered from extreme swelling, coughing and redness of the face and eyes. Egypt protesters stage 'last chance' freedom march

Tens of thousands of protesters chanting, "Leave, leave!" gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square Friday what promises to be a massive demonstration to force Egypt's ruling military council to yield power.

The Friday rally is dubbed by organizers as "The Last Chance Million-Man Protest," and comes one day after the military offered an apology for the killing of nearly 40 protesters in clashes on side streets near Tahrir over the last week.

The military also says that parliamentary elections due to start Monday will go ahead on schedule.

The protest is expected to peak after Friday prayers in the square.

US woman: I was sexually assaulted by Egypt police

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said pro-reform leader and Nobel peace laureate Mohamed El-Baradei had arrived in the square and was expected to join the prayers.

Nervous calm
A truce between security forces and hard-line protesters brought a nervous calm to the streets near Tahrir on Thursday after five days of clashes that turned part of the capital into a battle zone and left residents choking in clouds of tear gas.

The army council said it was doing all it could to prevent more violence, offered condolences and compensation to families of the dead and a swift enquiry into who caused the unrest.

But reports of unjustified police brutality that have swollen the ranks of protesters continue to filter out in the media.

In other developments Friday:

  • The Obama administration voiced fresh support Friday for restive Egyptians demanding a smoother, speedier transition to democracy following President Hosni Mubarak's fall from power earlier this year. "The United States will continue to stand with the Egyptian people as they build a democracy worthy of Egypt's great history," it said in a statement. "Most importantly, we believe that the full transfer of power to a civilian government must take place in a just and inclusive manner that responds to the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people, as soon as possible." The administration also reiterated that it has "condemned the excessive use of force" against protesters and that it has "called for restraint on all sides."
  • Family and friends of three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo waited anxiously for news that they had been released from police custody. Derrik Sweeney, Luke Gates and Gregory Porter, who attend the American University in Cairo, were arrested on the roof of a university building near Tahrir Square on Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters. A court in Egypt ordered the release of the students, a lawyer in Philadelphia confirmed Thursday.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wounded war veteran J.R. Martinez claimed victory on the 13th season of the hit TV show "Dancing With the Stars" on Tuesday, winning with a jive and a samba that thrilled audiences.

Martinez, dancing with partner Karina Smirnoff, wowed the judges throughout the 10-week competition and overcame an injured ankle in the final weeks of the popular dance contest to claim its coveted mirror ball trophy. His grit and determination proved an inspiration to viewers.

Rob Kardashian, brother of the Kardashian sisters of reality TV fame, was runner-up. He outscored Martinez by a razor thin margin of 113 to 112 total judges' points over the two-night finale, but audience voting counts for half the final result and viewers pushed Martinez into the winner's circle.

Both finalists performed a final samba to Ricky Martin's "Shake Your Bon Bon," Martinez in an open-neck white shirt set off by sparkling orange suspenders and Kardashian sporting a bright blue shirt enlivened by a bold yellow stripe.

Talk show host and actress Ricki Lake came in third, despite executing a tango to the theme from "Psycho" that scored a perfect single dance score of 30 from the judges.

Martinez, 28, an "All My Children" TV actor, Army veteran and motivational speaker, was ebullient upon his victory, thrusting his arm in the air, thanking voters and telling Smirnoff, "You are amazing and I'm so grateful that I was able to be a part of your first mirror ball trophy."

Kardashian, who was repeatedly cited for improvement and growth over the course of the season, said performing before millions of viewers weekly was "so out of my comfort zone."

"I definitely am not sad," he said. "I won in my book."

His sister, Kim Kardashian, was on the ABC show in 2008, but did not go far in the competition.

Highlights of Tuesday's finale included performances by Lady Antebellum and appearances by this season's eliminated contestants including Carson Kressley, Nancy Grace, David Arquette and Chynna Phillips, among others.

The season received much attention for the casting and the participation of Chaz Bono, the transgender son of superstar Cher, who had a sex change operation last year.

After negative reactions from some fans initially, Bono gained support and was not eliminated until the midway point. He even returned each week to cheer on the remaining dancers, saying on Tuesday that "it's turned into a family."

Portugal lowered to junk status as big strike hits (AP)

LISBON, Portugal ? Portugal's efforts to climb out of its economic crisis suffered a double setback Thursday as its credit rating was downgraded to junk status and a major strike gave voice to broad public outrage over austerity measures that have squeezed living standards.

Portugal's deepening plight underlined Europe's difficulties in finding a way out of the continent's government debt crisis which has recently shown alarming signs of spreading to bigger nations, most notably Italy.

Like others in the 17-country eurozone, Portugal has embarked on a big austerity program to make its debts sustainable. Earlier this year, Portugal followed Greece and Ireland in taking a bailout to avert bankruptcy.

As in Greece, though, the government's tough medicine, which is required by international creditors in return for the euro78 billion ($104 billion) in bailout money, is unpopular. The strike had a huge turnout, making it possibly the biggest walkout in more than 20 years.

"They are trying to destroy the national health service, and salaries haven't gone up since 2004," striking doctor Pilar Vicente told Associated Press Television News.

Fitch blamed Portugal's "large fiscal imbalances, high indebtedness across all sectors, and adverse macroeconomic outlook" for its decision to cut the country's rating by one notch to BB+. Rival Moody's already rates Portuguese bonds as junk but Standard & Poor's rates them one notch above.

Fitch's decision to cut Portugal to a non-investment grade will likely mean it's even more difficult for the country, which is already mired in a deep recession and is witnessing rising levels of unemployment, to return to bond markets by its 2013 goal. That raises the unappetizing prospect that Portugal, like Greece, may need a second bailout.

"Portugal's downgrade goes to show how hard it will be for troubled economies to pull themselves out of the crisis and how long this will take," said Sony Kapoor, managing director of Re-Define, an economic think tank. "The Portuguese downgrade highlights the limits of austerity policies both domestically in Portugal and in the wider euro area."

The 24-hour walkout came as Portugal, one of western Europe's smallest and frailest economies, endures increasing hardship as it tries to get its borrowing levels down.

The strike was called by Portugal's two largest trade union confederations, representing more than 1 million mostly blue-collar workers. Much of the private sector remained open for business though a huge Volkswagen car plant south of Lisbon, which accounts for 10 percent of Portuguese exports, decided to shut down production for the day because of problems facing its suppliers.

Much of the disruption was centered on the transport sector. Airlines canceled hundreds of international flights, and the airports of Lisbon, Porto and Faro were mostly empty as tens of thousands of workers walked off the job. Commuters had to get to work without regular bus or train services. The Lisbon subway was shut, and police said roads into the capital were more congested than normal.

Few staff were working at government offices, local media reported. Many medical appointments, school classes and court hearings were canceled, while mail deliveries and trash collection were said to be severely disrupted.

An unsustainable debt load and feeble economic growth over the past 10 years pushed Portugal towards bankruptcy earlier this year, forcing it to ask for a financial rescue.

In return for the aid, Portugal agreed to cut its debt burden to a manageable level by 2013. That goal requires it to enact deep spending cuts and hike taxes. Income tax, sales tax, corporate tax and property tax are all being increased. At the same time, welfare entitlements are being curtailed. Falling living standards have stoked outrage at the austerity measures.

"All the sacrifices the Portuguese are making today will prove worthwhile in the future," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Miguel Relvas told reporters.

A key difference from Greece is that the markets have not given up completely on Portugal. Though Portugal's key ten-year borrowing rate in the market stands at a still-exorbitant 12 percent, it's way below the 30 percent or so Greek equivalent. The aim is to eventually get that rate down below the 7 percent threshold that eventually proved to be the trigger for this year's bailout.

The Portuguese government, which came to power in June, has already conceded that its deficit reduction efforts have gone "off track" this year but says one-off measures, such as a 50 percent tax on Christmas bonuses and transferring banks' pension funds to the Treasury, will ensure Portugal achieves its 2011 budget deficit goal of 5.9 percent. That is down from 9.8 percent in 2010.

Debt is also expected to surpass 100 percent of GDP this year and peak at 106 percent in 2013 before retreating.

The austerity drive is hitting the real economy hard. Unemployment is up to 12.4 percent and is forecast to hit 13.4 percent next year. The European Commission predicts the Portuguese economy will contract by 3 percent in 2012 ? the worst performance in the eurozone.

Fitch said that the recession is making it more "challenging" for the government to achieve its deficit-reduction plan and will negatively impact bank asset quality. However, Fitch said the center-right government's commitment to the debt-reduction program was "strong."

Portugal has so far witnessed none of the violent demonstrations seen in Greece, though police said three Lisbon tax offices were vandalized Wednesday night.

Patriots Beat Chiefs: Rob Gronkowski Catches Two TDs From Tom Brady

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ? The Tom Brady-Rob Gronkowski connection kept clicking. So did the New England Patriots' defense and special teams.

Brady threw two touchdown passes to Gronkowski, Julian Edelman returned a punt 72 yards for another score and Kyle Arrington had two interceptions to help the Patriots beat the Kansas City Chiefs 34-3 on Monday night.

The Patriots (7-3) increased their AFC East lead to two games.

The Chiefs (4-6) weren't expected to do much on offense behind untested quarterback Tyler Palko, making his first career start with Matt Cassel injured. And they didn't, managing just a 26-yard field goal by Ryan Succop with 1:30 left in the first quarter for their only lead.

With Gronkowski collecting his ninth and 10th TD receptions of the year, the Patriots had their second straight dominant game after beating the New York Jets 37-16. The Chiefs lost their third straight.

The Patriots didn't generate much of an attack during their first four series. There were with three punts and a fumble by Brady that was recovered by Kansas City's Allen Bailey on the first play of the second quarter. And on his next series, Brady was sacked twice.

Then the protection improved and Brady, who had thrown for just 19 yards in the first quarter, took advantage, leading three consecutive scoring drives.

He connected with Gronkowski for a 52-yard score when which the tight end caught the ball over the middle and scampered the last 35 yards, barely managing to remain inbounds on the right side as he neared the end zone.

Arrington, who leads the NFL with seven interceptions, got his first of the game on Kansas City's next series and Stephen Gostkowski made it 10-3 at halftime with a 21-yard field goal.

The Patriots got the ball to start the third quarter and marched 85 yards on nine plays, scoring on Brady's 19-yard pass to Gronkowski, who somersaulted into the right corner of the end zone after being hit by Derrick Johnson.

Gronkowski has 20 touchdowns in 26 games, surpassing Mike Ditka's mark of 31 for the fewest games needed by a tight end to reach 20 touchdowns. He also pulled within three of the single-season, tight-end record of 13 touchdown receptions held by Antonio Gates of San Diego and Vernon Davis of San Francisco.

Indirect Verizon retailers free to order the ... Galaxy Nexus

Read our Galaxy Nexus Review!

Galaxy Nexus

Pardon us a minute while we read way too much into something. The screen you see here is what indirect Verizon retailers -- as in not a corporate-branded store -- now see to order their own Samsung Galaxy Nexus stock. And note that it says Samsung Galaxy Nexus, not Samsung Nexus Prime, which reappeared on a Best Buy flyer first posted in our Galaxy Nexus forums last night.

Point is, it's still coming to Verizon ... eventually ... and we're still expecting it to be the Galaxy Nexus. Probably.

Thanks, anon!

Anti-Chavez editor will be released in Venezuela (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? The lawyer for a jailed Venezuelan newspaper editor says a judge has ordered his client to be freed pending trial.

Lawyer Pedro Aranguren tells the Globovision television channel it is not yet clear when Leocenis Garcia will be released.

Garcia was arrested on charges of insulting public officials after his 6to Poder newspaper published a front-page photo montage portraying several female officials as cabaret dancers in revealing skirts and high heels. Among them were the Supreme Court president and elections chief.

The article accused the supposedly independent officials being subordinate to President Hugo Chavez.

Aranguren said Monday that Garcia was "unjustly jailed for a journalistic opinion."

AP Interview: Gorbachev supports Egypt protests

(AP) ? Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, whose reforms emphasizing change and openness helped lead to the fall of Communism, said Tuesday he sees today's protests in Egypt as "well-grounded and of vital importance."

"I am on the protesters' side," the 80-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner told The Associated Press.

The comments came during the third straight day of violent clashes in Cairo between protesters and security forces. Demonstrators are calling for a "second revolution" to force out the generals who have failed to stabilize the country, salvage the economy or bring democracy since the ouster of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak.

More broadly, Gorbachev said that leaders across the Arab world are now faced with rising calls for democracy because they have been in power for too long, and have created situations where people's voices have not been not heard.

"It's clear no one provoked them, that this conflict appeared out of the blue," Gorbachev said of the demonstrators. "Things were building up, and it all means that democracy ? they way they had it ? did not really work."

He said, however, that there was not any one-size-fits-all solution for the region.

"I don't think there will be a single model for all (the protests) developing in those countries..." he said. "Each country has its own history, culture, experience ? you can't ignore that."

Gorbachev, whose policies of perestroika and glasnost brought the democratic changes that led ? against his will ? to the 1991 Soviet collapse, was in Berlin to announce that the city would host the 2012 awards that bear his name.

The Mikhail Gorbachev Award, which is given to people who bring change to the world, will this year focus on addressing the sustainability of the world's megacities and be presented in March.

He said Russian democracy is now facing a problem with Vladimir Putin, who served two terms as president before becoming prime minister. He is running again for the presidency in the country's upcoming March election and seems certain to be returned to office.

"No matter how it formally fits the constitution, it essentially discredits democratic principles," Gorbachev said.

He said that Russia is still "very far from becoming a country with a developed, rooted democracy" and what is needed is for leaders who truly represent the people to be elected, versus those who "act based on corporate ideas and interests."

"If a true democracy (emerges) in Russia, people who enjoy respect will come to power," he said. "People who can play the role of leaders, and who can defend and express the interests of the people."

He cautioned, however, that day may still be some time in coming.

"Russia is in the middle of its way to sustainable and effective democracy," he said. "Churchill was right by saying that democracy is not the best form of government, but the rest of them are even worse."

Actor John Neville dies (AP)

TORONTO ? John Neville, a British-born Canadian actor and stage director who appeared in the hit TV series "The X-Files," has died. He was 86.

Neville, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, died Saturday in Toronto surrounded by family. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where Neville worked as an artistic director in the 1980s, announced his death in a statement over the weekend.

Neville appeared in dozens of movies, television shows and theater productions during a career that spanned six decades.

Perhaps the one that gave him the most prominence came in the '90s when he landed the recurring role of the "The Well-Manicured Man" in the "The X-Files."

Neville was born in England, emigrated to Canada in 1972 and later became a citizen.

Candidates focus on debate caution in YouTube era (AP)

NEW YORK ? White House candidates once looked to presidential debates for a chance to shine. Now the hopefuls play it safe as they try to avoid the kind of televised stumble that could fatally undermine their chances.

That's a dreaded YouTube moment ? a gaffe or flub that immediately goes viral online.

Ask Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose struggle in one debate to name the third of three federal agencies he would eliminate became the "oops" moment of the 2012 campaign. Or former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, whose campaign collapsed after he ducked the chance to confront rival Mitt Romney in a debate over his push for a health care mandate in Massachusetts. Or Herman Cain, whose "Princess Nancy" comment about former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi came just as he was battling decade-old allegations of sexual harassment.

To be sure, debates have produced plenty of cringe-inducing moments over the years. Michael Dukakis had a nonchalant response to a hypothetical question about his wife being raped and murdered in 1988. Al Gore's sighs and orange makeup in 2000 drew ridicule. And who could forget Barack Obama dismissing Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton as "likeable enough" in 2008?

But the Internet has intensified the impact of such gaffes, making normally risk-averse politicians even more careful ? and debates even more scripted. It all raises the question: Do voters ever really get to know the people they end up electing to lead the country? And, in this era of reality TV, are viewers getting less than reality when they tune into debates because of a candidate's fear of making a campaign-ending misstep?

"The viral nature of the post-debate video has had the effect of bludgeoning candidates," said Barbara O'Connor, emeritus professor of political communications at California State University-Sacramento. "I'm not sure it's part of the intellectual discourse that debates are meant to encourage. But watching candidates under stress is certainly one indication of how they'll perform as elected leaders."

Campaigns are always ripe with potential YouTube calamities ? Cain's confusion over a question about Libya at a newspaper editorial board interview became an instant classic when it went online earlier this month, as did a speech Perry gave in New Hampshire that led to speculation he might have been drunk.

But the debates have been particularly risky, given their frequency this year and the huge audiences they have drawn. A CNN forum set for Tuesday night in Washington will be the 11th Republican debate since May, and at least two more are scheduled before the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3.

The candidates were careful not to make many mistakes in the most recent forum, on Nov. 12. Devoted to foreign policy, the gathering produced no YouTube moments, but also not much news.

No one has been more cautious in debates than Romney, the field's nominal front-runner. The former Massachusetts governor has worked to draw little attention to himself, choosing his words carefully when answering questions and often refusing to take the bait if a rival tries to goad him or get under his skin.

Romney lost his cool once at a debate in October, after Perry pushed him to explain why he had once used a lawn care service that employed illegal immigrants. Romney said he had confronted the gardening service and insisted that they stop.

"Look,'" he said he told the service, "you can't have any illegals working on our property. I'm running for office, for Pete's sake! I can't have illegals!"

The line went viral immediately, drawing plenty of guffaws and renewing criticism of Romney as lacking core principles.

Reluctance to make a mistake carries its own pitfalls, according to Andrew Rasiej, the founder of Personal Democracy Forum, which studies the intersection of politics and technology.

"A fish never gets in trouble if it doesn't open its mouth, but there can be backlash against that," Rasiej said. "The candidate that recognizes the environment and is willing to engage in it authentically has the most potential to take advantage of it and manage the negative effects."

The debates have also helped boost momentum for once-struggling candidates like Cain, whose campaign caught fire after he promoted his 9-9-9 tax plan.

But Cain's debate performances became noticeably more careful after rising poll numbers made him a target for his rivals and after he was forced on the defensive over evidence he may have sexually harassed female subordinates when he was president of the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has also seen his fortunes improve thanks to several well-received debate performances, and polls now show him running roughly even with Romney. But Gingrich has acknowledged his new position means he will be more heavily scrutinized in debates and elsewhere. His campaign took the unusual step of setting up a new website, "Answering the Attacks," which seeks to pre-emptively respond to criticisms.

"The potential army of detractors or amplifiers has expanded exponentially, which makes the candidates more sensitive," Rasiej said. "Now, everyone's a publisher and everyone's a distributor. It makes the candidates realize there is no safe harbor anymore."

Vscreens from Sony Ericsson brings your mobile photos to bigger screens

Android Central

An interesting new application hit the Android Market today from Sony Ericsson which allows you to easily share content from your Android smartphone to a bigger screen via a web browser.

Called vscreens, the app is currently in beta but despite being a Sony Ericsson product, they claim it should work with all Android smartphones running 2.1 and above.

The idea is relatively simple. Download the free app from the Market (download links below) and install on your device. Then by visiting the vscreens website and scanning the displayed QR code, your phone automatically connects to the service allowing you to 'throw' your photos from your device to the browser. If both devices are on the same wifi network it is even possible to do the same with videos.

Attention should be paid to the beta tag, and this is still in its very early stages. It's an interesting idea though, so it could be good to watch where Sony Ericsson go with it. If you try it out, hit us up in the comments and let us know how it went.
