BEIRUT (AP) ? Fresh clashes between Syrian soldiers and rebels erupted across many parts of Syria Friday as U.N. envoy Kofi Annan urged the government to lay down its weapons first to immediately end the nation's yearlong crisis.

Syrian President Bashar Assad accepted a peace plan brokered by Annan earlier this week, but the bloodshed has persisted despite calls for a cease-fire. The opposition is deeply skeptical Assad will carry out Annan's peace plan, saying the president has accepted it just to win time while his forces continue their bloody campaign to crush the uprising.

"The government must stop first and then discuss a cessation of hostilities with the other side," Annan spokesman Ahmad Fawzi told reporters in Geneva. "We are appealing to the stronger party to make a gesture of good faith. ... The deadline is now."

On Friday, activists reported clashes in the suburbs of Damascus, in the northern Idlib province, the restive central province of Homs and in eastern Syria. The Local Coordination Committees said 15 people were killed across the country, including eight who died in the town of Quriya in the eastern Deir el-Zour province. There, security forces opened fire to disperse anti-government protesters, triggering a shootout and fierce clashes with local rebels in the area.

The LCC and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported intense clashes between government forces and defectors in the suburbs of Damascus, between the towns of Zamalka and Arbeen.

In Damascus, troops opened fire on protesters in the Kafar Souseh district, killing at least one.

Thousands of Syrians across the country held demonstrations calling for Assad's ouster as they emerged from mosques following Friday prayers, many protesting resolutions adopted by Arab leaders at a summit meeting in Baghdad on Thursday. The leaders called for talks between the government and the opposition ? not for Assad to step down, which is the key opposition demand.

"The most woeful weapon facing Syrians is the abandonment by Arabs and the silence of Muslims," read a banner carried by protesters in the northern town of Kfarrouma.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, meanwhile, was in Saudi Arabia for talks with King Abdullah in an effort to develop a strategy on the Syria crisis.

The visit comes ahead of a 60-nation gathering of the so-called "Friends of the Syrian People" in Istanbul over the weekend aimed at finding ways to aid Syria's fractured opposition. The U.S. is seeking to unify Syria's opposition movement and find ways to further isolate Assad's regime.

Annan's plan calls for an immediate, two-hour halt in fighting every day to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations. The plan also outlines a complete cease-fire, but that will take more time because Syria must first move troops and equipment out of cities and towns, government forces and the divided opposition must stop fighting, and a U.N.-supervised monitoring mission must be established.

The U.N. estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

In comments carried on Syria's state news agency on Thursday, Assad said "Syria will spare no effort to make (Annan's) mission a success and hopes it would return security and stability to the country."

But he added that the U.N. envoy must "deal with the elements of the crisis in a comprehensive way" and get a commitment from armed groups to cease their "terrorist acts" against the government. Throughout the crisis, Assad's regime has held that it faces not a popular uprising against his rule but a campaign of violence by terrorists.

"To make Annan's mission a success, he should focus on drying up the sources that support terrorism against Syria," Assad added.

Syria's uprising began a year ago with peaceful anti-Assad protests, which were met with a fierce crackdown by security forces. Since then, army defectors and protesters have taken up weapons, saying their only hope is to drive out Assad through force of arms. Annan's spokesman told The Associated Press on Thursday that the international envoy is looking at the possibility of borrowing U.N. peacekeeping troops to monitor a cease-fire.

On Friday, China backed Assad's demands that Syrian rebels had to commit to talks and stop attacks.

China, which along with Russia has twice vetoed proposed U.N. sanctions over Assad's crackdown, has said it backs Annan's peace plan, but also says there should be no external interference in Syria.

"We'd like to call on Syria's opposition to make responses as soon as possible to create conditions for opening dialogue and stopping violence," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a news conference Friday.

Samsung's vacuum tube driven speaker lineup gets priced for US, available this spring (update)

It's no secret that Samsung's been teasing a major interest in premium audio since CES, blending digitally powered speakers with vacuum tube pre-amplifiers. We didn't get a chance to check the systems out in Vegas, but today the company's spilling the details regarding US pricing on a trio of systems, all of which will be available in the spring. The star of the show is the $800 DA-E750 Audio Dock, featuring the rear-mounted dual dock for Galaxy (charging only) and iOS devices we first saw last month. Clad in a polished wood case (available in black or cherry), the 2.1 stereo system pumps out up to 100 watts of power through its glass fiber speakers and tweeters. As an added touch, its JJ Electronics 12AU7 tubes (the same you could use for guitar amps) are sunken in from its top under glass, allowing for clear view of their glow. Best of all, aside from the requisite USB and 3.5mm inputs, the DA-870 works wirelessly with Samsung's AllShare Play, AirPlay and Bluetooth 3.0 w/ aptX.

Moving past the HiFi category, Samsung's also priced a duo of surround sound systems aimed at the home theater market. To start, there's the $1,000 HT-E6730W Blu-ray 3D 7.1 home theater system and its $800 5.1 sibling, the HT-E6500W Blu-ray 3D -- both of which feature the same tube pre-amp and similar wireless capabilities as the DA-E750. Notably, the E6730W features a tiltable top speaker on each of its stereo towers, allowing for a more personalized output depending on your room. Furthermore, if you happen to have a DA-E750, too, you'll be able to stream the audio via Bluetooth if you find yourself far away from your television. There's no exact date on when you'll be able snag any of them, but Samsung notes that the 5.1 system is currently shipping.

Nine charged over 14-year-old's gang rape at party

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nine suspected gang members and associates were charged Friday in a sexual attack on a 14-year-old girl who was forced back inside an abandoned St. Paul house and raped after trying to leave a party last November, authorities said.

The girl and her friend were picked up at school by one of the men and lured to a party with suspected members of the TB22, or True Blood 22, street gang, prosecutors said.

"This crime was every parent's nightmare," Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said in a statement. "Crimes like these shock the conscience of our community."

According to a criminal complaint, the girl wanted to leave the Nov. 17 party at the abandoned St. Paul house but was pulled from a car and carried back inside.

"The victim reported grabbing whatever she could, including door frames, to stop them from bringing her into the bedroom," the complaint said. The girl told a nurse that once she was forced onto a mattress on the floor inside the bedroom, a group of men held her down while she struggled and yelled for help.

One of the defendants told police at least two men raped the girl, according to the complaint.

Citing complaints and petitions filed in Ramsey County District Court, the St. Paul Star Tribune?reported the alleged victim heard one?suspect say, "Are you in? I call second."

The girl told the nurse that when she asked the man who brought her to the party, 24-year-old Mang Yang, to help, he said he had to go, according to the complaint. The assault stopped when one of the men yelled "police" and everyone ran, the complaint said.

'Get them drunk'
According to the complaint, Yang told police he knew the others planned to rape the girl and that "is the gang's intent every time they get girls to a party with them to get them drunk and rape them."

One of the teens told police that Yang told him to hold the girl down. But the complaint said Yang told police he went looking for the girl after she was carried from his car and that he heard her screaming and saw teens run out of a room.

Yang said he asked her if anything happened but she was crying and didn't answer, according to the complaint.

Yang is charged along with four other men, ages 18 to 37. Four male minors, ages 15 to 17, also are charged. They each face four counts: aiding and abetting first-degree sexual conduct, conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual conduct, kidnapping someone under age 16, and committing a crime for the benefit of a gang.

All nine defendants are suspected gang members or associates.

Yang and three of the other adults charged made their initial court appearances Friday and were appointed public defenders.

"This is a very serious case involving many co-defendants and we look forward to providing the best defense possible in each case to reach a fair resolution," said Kelley Malone-O'Neill, managing attorney at the Ramsey County Public Defender's office.

Speaking to the Star Tribune, police spokesman?Todd Axtell added: "We are looking for other potential victims to come forward."

Satarii Swivl

In the age of overnight YouTube stardom, the power and reach of online video has never been greater. But putting together an engaging clip can be a big challenge?especially if you're riding solo. That's where the Swivl ($179 direct) from Satarii comes in, improving hands-free video recordings with your smartphone or small digital camera. The Swivl is an easy-to-use, automated "personal cameraman" that keeps the action in frame so you can focus on your own performance. Though it's a bit on the expensive side, and occasionally hiccups when it comes to smoothness and accuracy, the Swivl is an able companion for the burgeoning Internet star in all of us.

Design, Setup, and Features
There are two main components to the Swivl: The rotating, motorized base and the wireless remote. Both resemble black, oblong pucks, with glossy plastic bodies and green highlights throughout. The base is the larger of the two, measuring about 5.5 by 4.2 by 1.5 inches (HWD) at its widest points. At 2.5 by 2 by .75 inches, the remote is small, but still noticeable on video?especially when fastened onto a shirt with the attached metal clip. The remote also has a built-in microphone for clear wireless audio recordings. Along the side of the dock and remote are battery compartments (2 AA's for the dock and 2 AAA's for the remote are included). There's also a microUSB port on the back of the base?it's for a forthcoming AC adapter and future firmware updates (though neither were available at the time of this writing).

The Swivl is made first and foremost for the iPhone 4 and 4S. It features a stowaway cable with 30-pin Apple dock connector for attaching your phone and using the companion app to access extra features. You can also use the Swivl with any smartphone measuring less than 11mm thick, as well as a small digital camera weighing less than six ounces, using the including tripod mount adapter. But you lose some of the controls and features on the iPhone?more on that in a bit.

There are two identical buttons on both the main base and the remote: Action and Record. Mount your device, press and hold the Record button on the base until the LED indicator turns red, then do the same on the remote?at this point both LEDs should turn green to indicate connection. For non-iPhone users, that's it as far as setup. Walk around and the Swivl will stay locked onto the remote. If you press and hold the Action button on the remote, it adjusts the angle of the arm and ensures proper framing.

The Swivl app for iPhones opens access to additional settings and features. These include toggling between Standard and Sport mode, choosing the audio input (iPhone or remote mic), toggling focus lock, and checking on the battery of both the base and remote. These must be done before you begin filming and cannot be accessed remotely. Pressing the Record button on the remote will, of course, start recording on the iPhone.

Performance
Setup was simple and straightforward, and within a few minutes the Swivl was dutifully following my every move. There's a lot to like about the Swivl, but it has its limitations. For the most part, the Swivl's motorized base locked onto the remote and followed me as I paced up and down a hallway. However, it's most accurate when there is a direct line of sight between the base and remote. It stuttered when objects were placed in between, or when the remote was placed inside pockets. The tilting arm was also much slower than the rotating base, and I often found myself exaggerating movements with the remote to get the right angle?not exactly ideal for making a seamless video. The rotation was not always smooth, with some stuttering even when the remote had a clear line of sight.

There are two modes for the Swivl base, Standard and Sport. Sport was definitely faster, and able to keep up with my awkward sprints up and down the aisles of the PCMag labs. However, with slower movements, the Sport mode was jerkier than Standard. Overall, though, the Swivl proved to be a capable and proficient automated cameraman.

The built-in microphone on the remote is a great bonus?adding a lavaliere mic without any additional hardware. I tried using the microphone on the iPhone, but the audio was too low and picked up far too much room noise. When using the remote mic, however, my voice came through loud and clear, even when standing a good distance away from the base.

I also tested the Swivl with some non-iPhone options. An 8.49mm thick Samsung Galaxy S II?fit into the adjustable arm, though it was a bit snug. The included camera mount worked well with a Canon PowerShot Elph 310 HS?(a compact point-and-shoot) and with a Samsung WB750?(a slightly heavier compact superzoom), but with the latter the Swivl was clearly laboring, and movement was not as snappy or responsive.

Conclusions
The big question with the Swivl is: What is it for? For one, the Swivl would be a great companion if you FaceTime or Skype often and want the freedom to do other tasks simultaneously. The Swivl is also ideal if you're looking to put together engaging video tutorials. Browse YouTube and you'll find an endless selection of poorly produced or boring videos. For the most part, these self-produced videos are limited to stationary speakers and standard cutaways. Aspiring chefs, for example, could move from station to station, prepping various parts of a meal, without ever having to go back and readjust the camera. Additionally, if you're looking to put together a skills tape for sports recruitment, the Swivl could make a useful companion. Obviously a real cameraman would be better, but not everyone has access to the proper resources.

All told, if you spend a lot of time making your own videos, the Swivl could be a worthwhile investment that will save you a lot of time and trouble when shooting solo. It's no substitute for professional video production, but it doesn't have to be. This one is for the YouTube and Skype generation?and for that, it will certainly suffice.?
