Tigers bring back manager Jim Leyland for 2013

DETROIT (AP) ? Jim Leyland insisted throughout the latter part of the season that there would be a time and a place to discuss his managing future.

That moment came Tuesday ? when the Detroit Tigers announced Leyland would be back in 2013 with a one-year contract extension.

"I really don't know why this is such a shock to everybody, because we told everybody that we weren't going to talk about this until after the season," Leyland said. "It's not even 48 hours and it's done. I think it was pretty much exactly like we had planned it."

The Tigers and their manager quickly ended any remaining speculation about his status, just two days after Detroit was swept by the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. Leyland was managing on a one-year deal this year as well ? and he seems comfortable taking his future year by year at this point in his career.

"I'm going to be here in 2013, and we'll take that from there," Leyland said. "I wanted to manage, but I did think long and hard about it, because I wanted to make sure that I was going to be doing everything that you need to do to continue to keep this club headed in the right direction."

The 67-year-old Leyland leads all active managers with 1,676 wins, a total that puts him 15th on the career list. Next season will be his 22nd as a major league manager and his eighth in Detroit. He's led the Tigers to the postseason three times and the World Series twice.

Leyland's coaching staff is also expected back, although some roles within it could be altered.

By the time the World Series started, general manager Dave Dombrowski had indicated Leyland would be welcome back in 2013, but both the manager and GM sought to postpone any public discussion of his status until after the season.

"I think he pretty much understood that we wanted him back, but it was not something that he really wanted to talk about," Dombrowski said. "When you know somebody for an extended time, you know what areas you prefer to leave untouched ? you don't talk about certain things until it's that time."

Detroit faced high expectations this year after signing slugger Prince Fielder in the offseason. By mid-September, Leyland's future seemed uncertain as the Tigers struggled to keep pace in the AL Central, but they overtook the Chicago White Sox to win the division and then beat Oakland and the New York Yankees in the American League playoffs.

Despite the poor showing in the World Series, it was a happy enough ending for Leyland, who is well aware of the occasional criticism from fans and talk-show callers when things aren't going well.

"Probably 'Tom in Royal Oak' isn't too happy right now, but that's OK." Leyland said. "That's just the way it goes. I'm sorry Tom, but I'm back."

With Leyland remaining in charge, the Tigers can turn their attention to the rest of the offseason. They exercised a $6 million option on shortstop Jhonny Peralta and a $3.5 million option on RHP Octavio Dotel. Each had carried a $500,000 buyout.

Detroit is prepared to let closer Jose Valverde and designated hitter Delmon Young leave via free agency. Valverde had a poor postseason, and Young's spot will be taken by Victor Martinez, who is set to return next year from the knee injury that kept him out all of 2012.

The Tigers will try to re-sign free agent right-hander Anibal Sanchez, but he figures to be one of the top starting pitchers on the market.

"I had a great conversation with him the other night," Leyland said. "I told him, 'This is your chance, chase it, be happy. ... I'm telling you right now to your face, I really want you back. But this is your time. Go take advantage of it.'"

Dombrowski sounded confident Detroit might find an in-house candidate to close next year in Valverde's absence. The Tigers still have right-hander Joaquin Benoit in their bullpen.

Minor leaguer Bruce Rondon has turned heads, too.

"People don't sometimes believe this, but it is true. He averages 100 miles an hour and topped off at 103, and throws his breaking stuff for consistent strikes," Dombrowski said. "This guy is a special potential closer with the makeup of a closer, and normally you're not going to thrust that in a young guy's hands and say automatically, 'It's your job' ? but it would not surprise me if he earned that job. With the number of good arms that are out there, there are not many arms like this, and he cherishes that type of role."

Detroit also has several regular players eligible for arbitration, which could inflate the payroll. Among them are catcher Alex Avila, reliever Phil Coke, center fielder Austin Jackson and starters Doug Fister, Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer.

Just installed AVG Internet Security 2013 in workstations in a small-business environment, and using it for the first time. I'm dissatisfied by the lack of good, technical support information in the help section and the amount of abstract concepts such as "Identity Protection", or, misleadingly described and ambigous "Use DNS update" option.

The documentation (Help file) should include more advanced description of the program functionality, specifying the levels and areas of protection in more detailed, technical fashion - what filesystem, system resources & components are monitored, what monitoring mechanisms are used, etc.

Obama says debate prep going great, works on being aggressive

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Sunday his debate preparation was "going great" and aides said the Democrat would be more aggressive in his next face off with Mitt Romney after their last encounter gave the Republican challenger a boost.

Since that first debate in Denver on October 3, polls indicate Romney has erased Obama's lead heading into the November 6 election. Obama and Romney debate again on Tuesday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The third and final presidential debate will take place on October 22 in Florida.

Obama is spending the days ahead of the second debate at a resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, a battleground state that both candidates want to win in order to be victorious on November 6.

During a quick stop at a local campaign office, where he delivered pizzas to volunteers and called supporters by phone, Obama had an enthusiastic take on his practice sessions.

"It is going great," Obama told reporters.

Before his debate in Denver, Obama held a similar "debate camp" in the swing state of Nevada. During a visit to a campaign office there, he called the practice sessions "a drag."

That attitude may have shown through on stage. His performance was widely panned as passive, and Romney's energetic showing gave his campaign a significant lift.

"The president is his own harshest critic and he knows Mitt Romney had a better night at the first debate," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Sunday.

"The American people should expect to see a much more energized President Obama making a passionate case for why he is a better choice for the middle class."

Obama started debate preparation around 10 a.m. on Sunday before breaking for the campaign office stop. He joked with volunteers that he was able to use the traditional landline phones because he had them at home.

"We actually still have old style phones...at the White House," he said.

SHOWDOWN

On Sunday's talk shows, Obama's advisers said he was preparing for a stepped-up performance, but the Romney team sounded unimpressed.

"Well, the president can change his style. He can change his tactics. He can't change his record. And he can't change his policies. And that's what this election is about," Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie told CNN.

"I think the race is very close. I think the wind is at Governor Romney's back, and there's clearly momentum. You can see it on the trail, you can see it in the data," Gillespie said in a separate appearance on "Fox News Sunday."

In contrast to Obama's listless debate performance, Vice President Joe Biden was far more assertive in his debate on Thursday night with Romney's running mate Paul Ryan in Danville, Kentucky.

The next presidential debate is a "town hall" format, allowing audience members to pose questions. CNN anchor Candy Crowley will moderate the debate.

Former White House communications director Anita Dunn, a longtime Obama adviser, was playing the role of Crowley in the president's mock sessions, a campaign aide said.

Obama's chief campaign strategist David Axelrod told the "Fox News Sunday" program the president would be aggressive in making his case on Tuesday.

"But the other thing he's going to certainly do - I mean, we saw Governor Romney sort of serially walk away from his own proposals - certainly the president is going to be willing to challenge him on it as we saw the vice president challenge Paul Ryan," Axelrod said.

How the fiscal cliff turns into a gentle 'fiscal hill'

Hyper-polarized Washington hasn?t shown itself capable of rational behavior, Reich writes; It's why the nation is heading over a fiscal cliff that may begin to look more like?a hill whose slope remains uncertain but will almost surely be gradual.

These are awkward days for deficit hawks who believe the American economy can get back to health only if the nation gets its fiscal house in order. If they get their wish, the economy goes over a cliff.

Regardless of what happens Election Day, at the beginning of next year more than $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts automatically go into effect. That?s equivalent to about 5 percent of the entire U.S. economy, more than the projected growth of the whole gross domestic product next year.

The problem is, if we fall off this fiscal cliff we plunge into recession. That?s because the cliff withdraws too much demand from the economy too quickly, at a time when unemployment is still likely to be high.

The Congressional Budget Office projects real economic growth will drop at an annual rate of 2.9 percent in the first half of 2013, and unemployment will rise to 9.1 percent by the end of next year.

As Spain and Great Britain have demonstrated, launching fiscal austerity at a time when a nation?s economic capacity is substantially underutilized causes the economy to contract. This makes the debt even larger in proportion to the size of the economy. Rather than reassure global lenders and investors, it spooks them more.

America is about to fall off the fiscal cliff because Democrats and Republicans in Congress haven?t been able to agree on a plan for long-term deficit reduction ? and this failure will trigger automatic spending cuts in January. Meanwhile, the temporary tax cuts enacted by former President George W. Bush in 2001 and 2003, and extended for two years by President Obama, will run out December 31st, as will the President?s temporary jobs measures ? a payroll-tax holiday and extended unemployment benefits.

In a rational world, deficit reduction on this scale wouldn?t happen until the economy is once again healthy ? when unemployment has dropped to below 6 percent and economic growth is back to at least 3 percent. These would be sensible triggers.

But hyper-polarized Washington hasn?t shown itself capable of rational behavior. Democrats and Republicans have been so much at each others? throats that whenever one side senses the other wants (or fears) something more, the party that doesn?t want or fear it as much has a bargaining advantage in an ongoing game of chicken.

This is why the nation is heading over the cliff ? or, more accurately,?appears?to be heading that way. Congressional Democrats have concluded Republicans are more afraid than they are of going over it because the pending tax increases will fall most heavily on America?s wealthy, and half the spending cuts would come out of the defense budget. (Republicans, you may have noticed, are particularly solicitous of the wealthy and of defense contractors.)

So most Democrats have decided to wait it out in order to maximize their bargaining power in negotiations over how to reduce the long-term deficit. They want a deal that raises taxes only on America?s wealthy and doesn?t substantially alter Medicare, and Social Security ? which is the opposite of what Republicans want.

Democrats also reason that, once the Bush tax cut has been terminated, Republicans won?t be able to resist an offer to reduce taxes on the middle class (those earning $250,000 or less). After all, Republicans have pledged to vote for any and all tax cuts. Once Democrats get the best deal they can, they?ll make it retroactive to January 1.

As a practical matter, then, negotiations over America?s budget deficit will drag on into the new year, right over and beyond the fiscal cliff. A deal might not be struck until February, or even March.

But because everyone will know that the final compromise won?t be nearly as draconian ? and is going to be retroactive to the start of the year ? the cliff won?t feel like much of a cliff. In actual effect it will be more like a hill whose slope remains uncertain but will almost surely be gradual.

With any luck, by the time significant tax increases and spending cuts take permanent effect, unemployment will already have dropped and growth accelerated. In other words, the irrational and irascible American political process may come up with a timetable for reducing the budget deficit that?s surprisingly sensible.

Recent Acquisitions: 1936 Scrapbook of a Mickey Mouse Inker - San ...

Cultural institutions in San Francisco continually search for new acquisitions. Alexis Coe brings you the most important, often wondrous, sometimes bizarre, and occasionally downright vexing finds every Friday.

In 1936, a young woman named Ingeborg Willy went to work at Walt Disney Studios as an inker, responsible for every black line on any given page, a substantial task when it came to Mickey Mouse. The pace and mood of an animated story rests on a fulcrum that is the inker, but if Willy felt any pressure, it is nowhere to be seen in the scrapbook she kept of her first year in the ink and paint department.

Recent Acquisitions: Freemasons and the Case of the Missing Jewel

"The acquisition excites me because it's a personal documentation of events in a time in history, and for me, there couldn't be a better addition to the collection," explained Michael Labrie, director of collections at the Walt Disney Family Museum. He had other notebooks kept by employees at the museum, but they tended to have a more narrow focus, such as special effects, without any clues that might help historians get a better sense of the professional atmosphere at the studio, or the life of Walt Disney.

The scrapbook contains little commentary by Willy, but what is clear is that the inker relished in what looked to be a very exciting workplace. She included materials that spoke to her specific experience -- from pay stubs, time cards, and various internal memos, a personalized photo from Walt Disney himself -- and the studio as a whole. Ingeborg pasted original drawings alongside magazine cutouts featuring the actors who provided the models and voices for characters that would quickly become classics, including Dopey, Bashful, and the evil Queen. Her brief captions provide enough background to appreciate the often playful, candid photos of employees, including animators and airbrushers at their desks, prototypes of "Pluto, the Pup in Person," and a stuffed Mickey Mouse perched on a wall, looking noble from below. Clarence Nash, better known as Donald Duck, is shown walking towards what is later identified as "The Comic Strip Bungalow." There are several pictures of "Marjorie Belcher as 'Snow White,'" posing in different, but identifiable versions of the long iconic dress with short, puffy sleeves.

At a time when most women were most often relegated to the role of secretary in an office, Willy shows plenty of women working as checkers, color arrangers, mixing colors in the painting lab, and guarding the film vaults. Underneath a picture of a woman in a short-sleeved button-down shirt and pinned bob is the caption, "Martharose Bode is Inking Supervisor." Another features a group of women holding the various tools of their trade, pausing for "A Brief Chat," and eight women lined up in height order are identified as "'Our Gang' from 6'2 ? to 4'10 ?." The women seemed to enjoy smoke breaks, afternoon tea, and lunches under trees. Some of the best group shots reveal intimacy as the women lean into each other on the couch during "A Gossip," or link arms during smoke breaks.

Willy was an excellent accidental archivist who, by documenting her first year of work, sheds light on an important year, 1936-37, in the studio's history. Three Orphan Kittens (1935) earned an Academy Award for best short subject that year, but the studio was focused on developing its first ever full-length feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The scrapbook is undergoing substantial conservation work, but there are several pages currently on display, and more to come in the upcoming special exhibition, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of Classic," which will open on November 15 in celebration of its 75th anniversary.

The Walt Disney Family Museum is located at 104 Montgomery (at Lincoln, in the Presidio). The museum is open Wednesday-Monday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is $12-$20.

Telephone Tips that Will Help Generate Business

The influence that social media and the advancement of technology has had in recent years has meant that the traditional methods of communication are steadily becoming obsolete, particularly in business. The telephone has long been the most popular tool for communicating in the business world, allowing easy access to clients, customers, other businesses and employees.

Its effectiveness and versatility shows that there is still a place for the humble telephone within any business. They are the perfect way to communicate either internally or externally and can save time and money. It?s clear to see why they are still widely used within the business world and even within the digital age it?s safe to say there is still plenty life within it yet.

With the correct information and training, you and your business can maximise the opportunities good telephone skills provides and use them to your advantage.

Here are some useful tips to generate business for your brand which proves the telephone remains a vital source of communication.

Staff training

Although emails are predominately used for communication within most businesses, they do allow for review or proofreading before they are sent to the recipient, meaning that any errors within it can be addressed and dealt with. Telephone calls however allow very little room for error, so it?s wise to give staff in depth training. Poor communication skills could have a serious effect on the business. Telephone calls?aren?t?always pleasant affairs and within any business there is the possibility of conflicts. This could be disgruntled customers, impatient clients or simply an internal issue, so it?s best to be able to deal with any problem professionally and efficiently. Always remember that when communicating with anyone outside of the company you are a representative and the way you conduct yourself in the conversation could affect the businesses reputation or perception positively or negatively.

Avoid cold calling and aggressive selling

Cold calling used to be an effective way to boost sales and generate business, sadly, due to the evolution of technology and expansion of communication tools it is increasingly becoming out of date and unsuccessful. Customers are more likely to respond through good customer service and efficiently dealing with their issues and needs, so it?s advised to concentrate on using more modern methods of communication e.g. social media, direct mail, varied media distribution etc.

Customer is priority

They are the most important aspect of any company and without them a business could not function, so good customer service and maintaining relationships is vital. Vocal communication is important as many clients or customers find emailing to be too impersonal, so perfecting telephone manner and etiquette is paramount. It?s a great method of creating strong relationships and dealing with problems. It is also the perfect opportunity to create a division of your business that purposely deals with telephone calls and customer services. These employees can be specially trained to deal with a whole range of issues, leaving other areas of the business to deal with their specific jobs.

Taking into consideration these useful tips can significantly benefit your business in a whole variety of ways. Here some great benefits your business can acquire by using affective telephone communicating skills.

Easy internal communication

This is most effective within a large business situation and allows for good communication maintenance. Employees can communicate with each other throughout the working day in an efficient and simple way.? Regardless of the size of the location, an employee in one department can liaise with a colleague somewhere else in the business without leaving their desk, meaning more time can be spent on work.

Advanced features and link up systems

Technology has advanced within telephone communications so businesses can use them to their advantage. Many systems now allow for link up with mobile phones, email or even fax or pager, so clients, customers and employees can be contacted and dealt with regardless of where they are. They can be modified to provide bespoke settings for any company.

Low costs

Telephone communication can be very expensive, especially within a business situation. A large business may deal with thousands of calls a day, meaning tariffs will be high. To combat this it is possible to negotiate with a provider and set a monthly tariff, cementing the monthly cost to suit the business. If you were to pay for each month depending on communication rates rather than a set bill it could be very expensive.

Easy to expand

Every business uses telephone communications, regardless of the size. The beauty of using telephones is that if the business were to expand, it would be very straightforward to increase the amount of telephones as a company-wide system would be easy to install. It would also be possible to incorporate a bigger telephone system to suit your businesses specific needs.

Bethesda Green, Bethesda Magazine Name Green Award Winners ...

Bethesda Green named the 2012 Bethesda Magazine Green Award winners on Thursday night at its 3rd Annual Gala, a group that included tech companies, educational initiatives, a local municipality and a local private school.

Bethesda Green is an environmental nonprofit that promotes sustainability projects and education in Bethesda and includes a green business incubator.

Geostellar

Bethesda-based Geostellar provides an instant, free and independent analysis of your solar energy?potential. Through predictive algorithms, Geostellar analyzes properties for rooftop solar by computing?the site?s shading, slope and orientation. Combining this pixel-by-pixel breakdown with information on?electricity rates, usage and applicable incentives, Geostellar?s online platform enables property owners?to quickly assess the value of their rooftop for solar, select an installer, arrange financing and start?saving money while reducing carbon pollution.

Audobon Naturalist Society

Under the direction of Diane Lill, the Audubon Naturalist Society?s GreenKids program has produced a?green culture change throughout Montgomery County Public Schools. GreenKids has brought free,?hands-on environmental lessons to one-fifth of all MCPS schools, reaching more than 25,000 students?and 1,000 teachers. Since 2005, GreenKids has helped 40 MCPS schools become certified Maryland?Green Schools, including every school in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase cluster?the first and only allgreen cluster in the county.

GreenKids helps students to connect with nature at their schools by growing their own salads,?composting with worms, creating habitat for butterflies, monitoring the health of local streams,?becoming top-notch recyclers, and discovering new ways to save energy?from shutting down?computers at the end of each day to turning out the lights when the sun shines brightly in their?classrooms.

JBS International

JBS International, a woman-owned management and IT services firm, launched its formal?environmental sustainability efforts in 2008. Under the leadership of Chair Diane Harder, the JBS?Green Team has partnered with Whole Foods to bring composting to the firm. Jerri Shaw, JBS coCEO, notes, ?Thanks to members of the Green Team, we will be taking tons of recyclable and reusable?materials out of the waste stream from our offices in North Bethesda.?

Employee educational sessions and signs explain what is compostable and recyclable. Regular trash?bins were replaced with bins that have three options: compost, recycle, and waste. Last year, JBS?International diverted 12 tons of compostable waste from landfills. For corporate meetings and events,?the firm replaced paper products and plastic-ware with reusable and recyclable cups and uses a greencertified catering company. Cleaning supplies are nontoxic and purchased for their environmental?safety.

Calleva

Offering a unique mix of outdoor education and adventure programming, Calleva combines lessons on?water conservation, erosion and runoff control and farming with group recreational activities on the?Potomac River, demonstrating the importance of sustainable farming to the health of our local?ecosystem. Calleva experiences take place on its working farm near Poolesville as well as on rivers,?trails and forests all over our region.

Each year, Calleva works with more than 70 schools and countless families (over 3,000 students and?summer campers) in the area with experiences designed to teach the interconnectedness of local farms,?forests, rivers and streams. Calleva?s annual Earth Day clean-ups demonstrate its commitment to?bringing community groups together for good works. In 2012, Calleva coordinated a clean-up that?removed garbage from the Potomac River and creek banks, including assorted tires, chairs, barrels and?other large items.? They also repaired park benches and removed invasive species that are choking out?native plants along the Potomac River. These kinds of events help to promote cooperation, awareness?and stewardship among outdoor enthusiasts, conservationists, schools and other community groups.

City of Rockville

Rockville adopted a comprehensive sustainability strategy in 2007, one of the first communities in the?nation to do so. Under that strategy, Rockville has greened up its zoning and building codes; moved to?acquire 60 percent of its electricity from wind generation; and adopted ordinances on green purchasing,?water pollution and tree protection. Rockville has also adopted a model local storm-water management?program, restoring several miles of damaged streams.

Rockville has also launched a single stream (no sorting) recycling program offering residents one of the?most extensive programs in the State, including curb-side collection of scrap metal, electronics, and?household hazardous waste, most of which are reused or recycled.

Landon School

Adopting an Environmental Values Statement in 2010, Landon has made a number of meaningful?changes. Environmental studies are part of the overall experience at Landon, and every freshman takes?a course in Environmental Stewardship.

Landon has made significant progress in reducing its energy output, using conservation measures that?have saved the equivalent of almost 6 weeks of energy usage. Changes in the dining hall have reduced?roughly 14 tons of trash hauled away for the year.

With the help of a Landon family, the school installed a state-of-the-art energy monitoring system that?provides real time energy usage information for all five major buildings on campus. Guided by this?information, Landon has implemented a multi-step program of energy conservation measures that saves?the school nearly $50,000 a year.

John Spears, Sustainable Design Group

For the last 35 years, home designer John Spears has pursued a singular purpose, working toward the?goal of perfecting zero energy and self-sufficient buildings. He has built zero energy homes on 5?continents for private clients and multinational organizations.

In a time when people are pushing solutions and the public is confused by competing claims, Spears?represents the quiet practical professional looking for the best solutions and the correct materials for?each project. Innovative materials are chosen based on their appropriateness, and gadgetry that cannot?contribute to the system performance is rejected. Each system is evaluated on cost, performance,?sustainability and durability, allowing quantifiable justification for each material choice.

Validating that business approach, Spears and his partners recently received national recognition for?building affordable zero energy housing in Frederick.

NC State nanoflowers can boost battery and solar cell capacity, make great prom accessories

NC State crafts nanoflowers that boost battery and solar cell capacity, would make great prom accessories

We see a lot of sleek-looking technology pass through our doors, but it's rare that the inventions could be called beautiful by those who aren't immersed in the gadget world. We'd venture that North Carolina State University might have crossed the divide by creating an energy storage technology that's both practical and genuinely pretty. Its technology vaporizes germanium sulfide and cools it into 20-30 nanometer layers that, as they're combined, turn into nanoflowers: elegant structures that might look like the carnation on a prom dress or tuxedo, but are really energy storage cells with much more capacity than traditional cells occupying the same area. The floral patterns could lead to longer-lived supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries, and the germanium sulfide is both cheap and clean enough that it could lead to very efficient solar cells that are more environmentally responsible. As always, there's no definite timetable for when (and if) NC State's technology might be commercialized -- so call someone's bluff if they promise you a nanoflower bouquet.
