China's love affair with cars is choking city air

BEIJING (AP) ? Endless lines of slow-moving cars emerge like apparitions and then disappear again into the gloom of the thick smog that has shrouded Beijing and reduced its skyline to blurry gray shapes.

With more than 13 million cars sold in China last year, motor vehicles have emerged as the chief culprit for the throat-choking air pollution in big cities especially Beijing.

As the Chinese middle-class expanded dramatically over the last 20 years, cars became the new symbol of prosperity. With the economy continuing to grow, the love affair with cars will only bloom more, and is already posing a challenge for dealing with the hazardous air pollution in urban China that has a widespread impact on health, productivity and quality of life.

Sperm whale secretion may spell fortune for UK man

LONDON (AP) ? One very smelly sperm whale secretion may soon make one lucky British beachcomber a very happy man.

Ken Wilman told British broadcasters that he had been walking along Morecambe beach in northern England when his dog, Madge, discovered a hard, soccer ball-sized piece of smelly rock.

"She wouldn't leave it alone. I picked it up and it smelt horrible so I knocked it with my walking stick and a small lump came off," he told Sky News television in comments broadcast Thursday. "I put both pieces back on the beach but something in the back of my mind told me it might be something unusual."

One Google search later and Wilman realized that Madge had found ambergris, a waxy byproduct of sperm whale digestion that has traditionally been used in perfumes, spices, and medicines ? and can fetch large sums of money. He said he immediately drove back to the beach to find the ambergris. He said he has been offered ?50,000 ($68,000) for the musky material.

Callum Roberts, a professor of marine conservation at the University of York, said the find appeared legitimate.

"It's a waxy, yellow-gray piece of flotsam. I'm sure that 95 percent of people would walk past it without further thought," he said in a telephone interview. He praised Wilman's quick thinking, invoking the scientific dictum that "fortune favors the prepared mind."

Wilman, 50, had a slightly different take on his find, telling BBC television that people should trust their dogs.

"If your dog pays an interest in something, YOU pay an interest in something," he said. "Because you never know. There's gold out there on that beach ? floating gold."

NASA's Planet-Hunting Spacecraft Recovering from Glitch

NASA's Kepler space telescope has resumed its search for alien planets after resting for 10 days to work out kinks in its attitude control system, mission officials announced today (Jan. 29).

Kepler went into a protective "safe mode" on Jan. 17 after engineers detected elevated friction levels in one of its reaction wheels ? devices that maintain the observatory's position in space. Engineers spun the wheels down to zero speed, hoping the break would redistribute lubricant and bring the friction back down to normal.

That phase is now over and Kepler is back in action, though it will take time to determine if the problem is solved.

Kepler began coming out of safe mode at 2:30 p.m. EST (1930 GMT) Sunday (Jan. 27) and started collecting science data again at 8 p.m. EST Monday (Jan. 28; 0100 GMT Jan. 29), officials wrote in a mission update today. [Gallery: A World of Kepler Planets]

"The spacecraft responded well to commands and transitioned from thruster control to reaction wheel control as planned," Kepler mission manager Roger Hunter wrote in the update. "During the 10-day resting safe mode, daily health and status checks with the spacecraft using NASA's Deep Space Network were normal."

Kepler flags exoplanets by detecting the telltale brightness dips caused when they pass in front of their parent stars from the instrument's perpsective. The telescope requires three functioning reaction wheels to stay locked onto its roughly 150,000 target stars.

When Kepler launched in March 2009, it had four reaction wheels ? three for immediate use, and one spare. But one wheel (known as number two) failed in July 2012, so a major problem with the currently glitchy wheel (called number four) could spell the end of the $600 million Kepler mission.

It's unknown at the moment if the 10-day rest period will bring wheel number four back into line.

"Over the next month, the engineering team will review the performance of reaction wheel #4 before, during and after the safe mode to determine the efficacy of the rest operation," Hunter wrote.

The wheel has acted up before without causing serious problems.

"Reaction wheel #4 has been something of a free spirit since launch, with a variety of friction signatures, none of which look like reaction wheel #2, and all of which disappeared on their own after a time," Hunter wrote.

To date, Kepler has discovered more than 2,700 exoplanet candidates. While just 105 of them have been confirmed by follow-up observations so far, mission scientists estimate that more than 90 percent of them will end up being the real deal.

Toyota?s 2013 Prius line dominates this year?s Greenest list, an automotive ranking by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

The Toyota Prius C, a compact version of the Prius with a 85 kmpg city and 74 kmpg highway efficiency, received the highest green score with 58 points.

The original Prius, Prius plug-in hybrid and the Honda Civic hybrid rounded out the vehicles with the five highest green scores.

This year, conventional vehicles were largely pushed off the Greenest list by hybrid-electic, plug-in hybrid-electric and all-electric vehicles. The Scion Iq and SmartForTwo are the only non-hybrid, non-plug-in vehicles to remain on the list.

The Greenest list analyses vehicles based on their ?green score,? which incorporates tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases.

The Engadget Interview: Daniel Graf talks Google Maps for iOS (video)

"It has been a wonderful success for us," says Daniel Graf about Google Maps for iOS. Originally from Switzerland, Graf worked for Leica and Philips, and went on to co-found video service Kyte before landing at Google in 2011. There, he ran the mobile apps lab before taking the role of director of Google Maps for mobile, where he oversees the Android and iOS versions of the iconic mapping app. We recently got the chance to spend a few minutes with Graf at Google's Mountain View headquarters to discuss the iOS app, which launched last December. He's clearly passionate and proud of his work: "It has been an interesting project, because we got the opportunity to start from scratch." Graf explains that the Android version "is actually seven years of history, seven years of product, [...] seven years of user experience. On iOS, we didn't have those seven years so that gave us a chance to take a step back and say. 'Hey, what would be the next-generation mobile mapping experience?'" Read on after the break.

With iOS 6, Apple ended its partnership with Google and experienced some growing pains with its own mapping app. Still, even in iOS 5, the app only offered a fraction of the functionality provided by Google Maps for Android -- lacking voice guidance and 3D views, for example. Graf and his team set out to create an iOS app that wouldn't just catch up with the Android version, but would also showcase the direction the company was taking in terms of user experience. "When Larry [Page] came on board as CEO two years ago, he talked about beautiful experiences and we had very functional and very useful experiences and in term of beauty I think there was work to do," says Graf. "Now two years later if you actually use our product on desktop, on Android, on iOS there's a theme there ... there's a design language there, and I would say actually they're beautiful."

It's not just Google Maps for iOS that's been revamped. Over the past nine months, the company's been busy updating its mobile apps across the board with a more cohesive look and feel. It all started with Google Now -- launched alongside Jelly Bean at Google I/O -- followed by Google+ on both platforms, and more recently GMail and Google Maps on iOS. Interestingly, the Android version has not (yet) been updated to reflect the new design language. The iOS app makes extensive use of info sheets similar to those used in Google Now. "Given the feedback we have gotten from our audience about the user experience here, I would say this is kind of the direction we want to move forward," says Graf. "It's way more use-case driven ... It should actually happen based on your actions."

We asked Graf what challenges his team encountered while building Google Maps for iOS. "With a mapping app, it's actually similar to a gaming app because the map you see here, the 3D rendering we have here, so you need a 3D renderer; you need an engine for that, and that was new for us -- a 3D renderer for iOS." The iOS app is written in Objective C (versus Java on Android) and required fine-tuning: "To get that to a performance [level] where we have it now, that was definitely a technical challenge." But there was another hurdle on iOS: "There's no common login infrastructure like we have on Android -- hopefully that's coming." When pressed whether this is a political issue (related to Apple's stringent app requirements) Graf mentions that "it's a business decision, but it's a technical challenge as well."

Despite being more polished than its Android counterpart, Google Maps for iOS lacks some features, such as Latitude (it's a separate app). Graf admits that "it would be quite interesting to see your friends on the map within Google Maps for mobile." For this version, however, it was important to simplify: "We obviously wanted this app out before the holidays, which we managed to do in December, so there was a lot of time pressure to get it out but we didn't want to make compromises so we said is let's focus on the key use cases which I think we nailed." We inquired about how much Google Maps development is cross-platform. "Of course we have an Android team; we have an iOS team; we have different platform teams and they work very closely together," says Graf. "You do want basically the best experience possible for a platform, so you probably have to develop native." Watch the full video interview above.

Hospital patient loads often at unsafe levels, physician survey says

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Nationwide, more than one-quarter of hospital-based general practitioners who take over for patients' primary care doctors to manage inpatient care say their average patient load exceeds safe levels multiple times per month, according to a new Johns Hopkins study. Moreover, the study found that one in five of these physicians, known as hospitalists, reports that their workload puts patients at risk for serious complications, or even death.

The research, reported in JAMA Internal Medicine, comes as health care systems anticipate an influx of new patients generated by the Affordable Care Act over the next few years; as restrictions on resident-physicians limit their duty hours; and as one in three physicians is expected to retire or otherwise leave medicine over the next 10 years, cumulatively resulting in increased patient care needs coupled with stressed staffing demands.

"As perceived by physicians, workload issues have the significant potential to do harm and decrease quality," says study leader Henry J. Michtalik, M.D., M.P.H., M.H.S., an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "It is the elephant in the room that cannot be ignored. We have to find that balance between safety, quality and efficiency."

The Johns Hopkins study comprised a survey of 890 hospitalists across the United States, 506 of whom responded. Twenty-two percent of the respondents reported ordering costly and potentially unnecessary tests, procedures or consults because they didn't have time to properly assess patients assigned to their care.

"If a hospitalist is short on time and a patient is having chest pains, for example, the doctor may be more likely to order additional tests, prescribe aspirin and call a cardiologist -- all because there isn't adequate time to immediately and fully evaluate the patient," Michtalik says.

For the study, Michtalik, a hospitalist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and his colleagues electronically surveyed self-identified hospitalists enrolled in an online physician community, QuantiaMD.com. Of those who responded over the course of four weeks in November 2010, the average age was 38 years and more than half worked in community hospitals. Among other questions, physicians were asked to report what they felt was a safe number of patients to see in a typical shift. Most physicians reported that they could safely see 15 patients in a shift if they could focus 100 percent on clinical matters. When the average actual workload was compared to the perceived safe workload, 40 percent of physicians exceeded their own reported safe level.

Michtalik says that JHH's hospitalists typically stay below that number, while hospitalists at community hospitals often see more than 15 patients per shift.

"Hospitals need to evaluate workloads of attending physicians, create standards for safe levels of work and develop mechanisms to maintain workload at safe levels," he adds.

Researchers find that heat given off by metropolitan areas can lead to continental-scale winter warming in high latitudes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? The heat generated by everyday energy consumption in metropolitan areas is significant enough to influence the character of major atmospheric circulation systems, including the jet stream during winter months, and cause continental-scale surface warming in high latitudes, according to a trio of climate researchers that includes Ming Cai, a professor in Florida State University's Department of Meteorology.

Led by Guang Zhang, a research meteorologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the scientists report in the journal Nature Climate Change that waste heat released in major cities in the Northern Hemisphere causes as much as 1 degree C (1.8 degrees F) of continental-scale winter warming in high latitudes of the North America and Eurasian continents. They added that this effect helps to explain the disparity between actual observed warming in the last half-century and the amount of warming predicted by computer models that only include anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols.

The study, "Energy Consumption and the Unexplained Winter Warming Over Northern Asia and North America," appears in online editions of the journal on Jan. 27. The study was funded in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Program Office.

Cai, Zhang and Aixue Hu of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., considered the energy consumption from heating buildings to powering vehicles that generates waste heat release. The world's total energy consumption in 2006 was 16 terawatts (one terawatt equals 1 trillion watts). Of that, 6.7 terawatts were consumed in the 86 metropolitan areas considered in this study.

"The burning of fossil fuel not only emits greenhouse gases but also directly effects temperatures because of heat that escapes from sources like buildings and cars," Hu said.

The release of waste heat is different from energy that is naturally distributed in the atmosphere, the researchers noted. The largest source of heat, solar energy, warms the Earth's surface. Atmospheric circulations distribute that energy from one region to another. Human energy consumption distributes energy that remained dormant and sequestered for millions of years, mostly in the form of oil or coal. Though the amount of human-generated energy is a small portion of that transported by nature, it is highly concentrated in urban areas.

"The world's most populated metropolitan areas, which also have the highest rates of energy consumption, are along the east and west coasts of the North American and Eurasian continents, underneath the most prominent atmospheric circulation troughs and ridges," Cai said. "The concentrated and intensive release of waste energy in these areas causes a noticeable interruption to normal atmospheric circulation systems, leading to remote surface temperature changes far away from the regions where the waste heat is generated."

The authors report that the influence of urban heat can widen the jet stream at the extratropics, or area outside the tropics. They add that the heating is not uniform. Partially counterbalancing it, the changes in major atmospheric systems cool areas of Europe by as much as 1 degree C, with much of the temperature decrease occurring in the fall.

The study does not address whether the urban heating effect disrupts atmospheric weather patterns or plays a role in accelerating global warming, though Zhang said drawing power from renewable sources such as solar or wind provides a societal benefit in that it does not add net energy into the atmosphere.

Zhang said the climate impact this research studied is distinct from the so-called urban heat island effect, an increase in the warmth of cities compared to unpopulated areas caused by land use changes. Such island effects are mainly a function of the heat collected and re-radiated by pavement, buildings and other urban features.

"What we found is that energy use from multiple urban areas collectively can warm the atmosphere remotely, thousands of miles away from the energy consumption regions," Zhang said. "This is accomplished through atmospheric circulation change."

They also find observational evidence indicates that the waste heat can be the "missing forcing" that would account for the discrepancy between the observed temperature change and that is simulated in computer models forced only by anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols. They suggest that the influence of energy consumption should be considered, in addition to heat-trapping gases and aerosols, as necessary anthropogenic factors in computer models to predict the future climate.

Jon's Blog: Horse Shooting in Johnson County, Iowa // Plus My ...

Not too long ago, I learned from the KCJJ Facebook page some troubling news about a horse, specifically:

Which got me thinking that this would be a really good article to write about if I knew more, which then got me thinking that I haven't posted a list of favorite comic book characters in a while. So until I get more information about our local horse shooting, I though it might be fun to list my Favorite Five Comic Book Horses!: 5. Horse: Horse is one of those characters that I know almost nothing about, but that I would absolutely love to see in comic books so that I could learn about him. Horse was a Chinese agent who once belonged China's now-former national super-hero team, China Force. After he left China Force, Horse and two other super-agents attempted to conquer Hong Kong, but ended up getting killed by an American agent named Rick Mason. Horse's powers were pretty basic. He could kick -- really hard. I would love for someone to resurrect this Chinese mutant and I'm not even for sure why. I like the simplicity of his powers, but I also kind of just like the way he looks. And sometimes that's enough to get onto my various lists of favorite comic book characters! 4. Brightwind: Long ago while lost in Asgard, Danielle Moonstar of the New Mutants rescued a winged horse from hunters. Because of her actions, Danielle ended up becoming a Valkyrie. Brightwind moved to the X-Mansion with the X-Men and New Mutants and then died and then got better, but she's always remained bonded to Danielle. In recent years, Danielle once again became a part-time Valkyrie. Unfortunately, we haven't seen enough of Brightwind for my preference. Danielle is slated to joined an all-female team of Defenders soon and that team is being modeled after the Valkyries, so I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get to see more of Brightwind soon! 3. Thunder: Several years ago, Marvel Comics relaunched a poorly conceived version of Alpha Flight, Canada's premier super-team. Sasquatch was gathering a new team of Alphans and recruited a local hero named Major Mapleleaf, who appears to have the powers of flight and super-strength and invincibility. Except that he didn't. His horse did. That's right. Major Mapleleaf's horse, Thunder, was a magical steed who kept his master safe from harm -- until the costumed mountie got himself killed by an out-of-control mutant named the Collective. Presumably Thunder is still galloping around Toronto -- which offers the possibility of future Pet Avengers membership. Not that I'm begging... 2. Comet: I have actually never read a comic book with this classic comic book character in it, but the pure creepiness of Supergirl's pet horse, Comet the Super-Horse, is enough to get him onto this list. Apparently, Comet the Super-Horse was once an ancient centaur who got transformed into a horse by a nasty witch. Supergirl eventually adopted him as her pet horse and he eventually fell in love with her. He eventually begins visiting her dreams every night and then learned how to become human when in our solar system so that he can romance Supergirl. When not making out with Supergirl, Comet could often be seen fighting crime with Krypto and the other Superman-themed animals in the Legion of Super-Pets. 1. Comet: You read the correctly. My first and second favorite comic book horses are both named Comet. This second Comet was introduced in a relaunched SUPERGIRL comic book back in the late 90s. Supergirl kept running into this really fast horse-like alien hero named Comet and found herself falling head-over-heels for the big lunk. There was an ongoing storyline where she struggled to figure out which of the guys in her life was Comet's alter ego. Then she found out that Comet wasn't a "he". He was a "she" named Andrea Martinez. Sort of. You see, Comet was an injured jockey who became a superhuman through an injection of equine DNA and Andrea Martinez was a suicidal lesbian who had just been rejected by her parents. Comet tried to save the suicidal Andrea and they both ended up getting killed by an avalanche. Fortunately, this sacrifice merged and resurrected the two into an Earth Angel of Love. (Yes, it's complicated, but they were still pretty cool.) Comet and Supergirl eventually broke up, which led to Comet hooking up with another Earth Angel named Blithe (a bisexual woman who loved both Comet and Andrea).

Comet was one of the first blatantly gay characters in comic books back in the late 90s. Before that, LGBT characters weren't unheard of, but they were often more hinted at than anything else. Andy was an out lesbian who was clearly attracted to both Supergirl and Blithe and that was pretty cool at the time. Unfortunately, both Comet and Blithe disappeared into comic book limbo when this particular SUPERGIRL series got canceled. Still, there's hope that one or both of them will revisit Supergirl at some point in the future. Maybe...

Israel leader seeks wide coalition to face threats

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister says he wants to build a broad governing coalition to face serious security threats to Israel, including Syria's chemical weapons and Iran's nuclear program.

Benjamin Netanyahu told his outgoing Cabinet Sunday that Israel must be ready for any development in the turbulent region.

Netanyahu's ticket won the most seats in last week's parliamentary election, meaning he will likely serve another term as prime minister. But with his traditional hardline and religious allies holding only a slim majority in parliament, Netanyahu has reached out to centrist parties in hopes of building a broad coalition.

On the occasion of international Holocaust Remembrance Day, Netanyahu called Iran the world's leading Holocaust denier. He accused Tehran of seeking to destroy the Jewish state, and said Israel takes the threats seriously.

BlackBerry Z10 priced at ?480 sim-free by purported Carphone Warehouse database leak (update)

With all the BlackBerry 10 leaks as of late, it seems inevitable that pricing info would get ousted in the lead up to January 30th. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, it appears that the sim-free version of RIM's Z10 will cost UKers a cool £480 at Carphone Warehouse (for perspective, a 16GB iPhone 5 would run you just roughly £30 more). The leak comes from what's said to be a snapshot of the company's internal database, listing the white variant. The attached BLAZ10WHI model number also syncs up nicely with the previous slip from the retailer. At this rate, not much is going to be left to the imagination when RIM officially unveils its devices come Monday -- who likes surprises anyway, right?

Update: We've updated the post to reflect that the phone was touted to us as "sim-free," specifically.

Puglias Stunning Sites And Raved About Restaurants

The Puglia region has not always been one of Italy?s traditional tourist destinations, however it has recently become quite popular as travellers discover the area's many charms. Its Baroque towns, stunning beaches, magnificent sites and delectable cuisine have now made it a top choice for people from all walks of life. To truly have the best experience possible in Tuscany, villas are the perfect accommodation. What to See While in Puglia

Basilica di San Nicola: This remarkable Puglian-Romanesque style basilica was one of southern Italy?s first churches, built to house the relics of St Nicholas (better known in other European countries as Father Christmas), which were stolen by Turkish fisherman in the year 1087. His remains are said to have special powers and, for this reason, and also because he is the patron saint of prisoners and children, the basilica remains an important place of pilgrimage.

The 13th century ciborium, which hangs over the altar, is the oldest in all of Puglia. The basilica is certainly a beautiful site and should not be missed while visiting Tuscany. Villas in Puglia are located an easy distance of the remarkable cathedral and getting around the area is simple.

Teatro Petruzelli: Theatre lovers will be delighted to visit the Petruzelli Theatre. When it first opened in 1903, a reported 3200 squeezed inside the building and newspapers reported that there was not a single empty space within the theatre. It has become one of Italy?s most renowned opera houses and has seen the likes of Frank Sinatra, Rudolph Nureyev, Liza Minnelli, Riccardo Muti and Luciano Pavarotti amongst many others.

While staying in Tuscany, villas located near the opera house become very popular when famous singers perform so it is recommended to book in advance if you are planning to attend a concert.

Where to Eat in Puglia

La Ripa: This family run restaurant has plenty of character and was formerly a horse stable. All of the meat and vegetables are both homegrown and organic (as is one of the specialities ? the podolico cheese). The most famous dish on the menu is the Foglie d?ulivo con gamberi, rucola, ricotta e julienne di zucchini (olive-leaf shaped pasta with prawns, zucchini and rocket lettuce). It is a must to try.

La Cantina Ti l?Artisti: This is certainly a restaurant for people who enjoy an eclectic atmosphere. A family of artists, who have decorated the interior with their own black-and-white photos, runs the restaurant. Live bands frequently play at the restaurant and it attracts a large bohemian crowd. The food is traditional with local dishes such as taiedda di riso patate e cozze (a famous dish of rice, potatoes and mussels) being served.

Puglia is a fabulous region for a holiday in Tuscany. Villas are located throughout the area and are within easy access of the most attractive sites. What a way to enjoy an Italian getaway!

Bond, James Bond: Real spy gadgets to be auctioned

A remarkable catalogue detailing top-secret designs for James Bond-esque gadgets used by British soldiers during the Second World War is to go up for auction.

The extraordinary designs includes coat buttons and gold teeth containing hidden compasses, cameras disguised as cigarette lighters and concealed hacksaws.

The catalogue was put together by inventor Christopher Clayton-Hutton, a real-life 'Q', who was an intelligence officer for MI9, a secret department of the War Office.

MI9 provided British troops with potentially life-saving equipment that looked like ordinary everyday objects.

Hutton's designs shed light on the inventive methods some British prisoners of war adopted to fool the enemy.

The highly creative designs included cloth maps - printed on silk with non-running ink - which could be hidden in a chess piece or a pack of cards, and uniforms which could be tucked and folded into business suits.

An estimated 400,000 maps were printed during the war and about 17,000 Allied escapees carried them around.

Lionel Willis, collectors specialist from Bonhams auctioneers said: "Very few of these catalogues are known to have survived and the remaining copies form rare pieces of secret service history.

"They give a fascinating insight into the ingenuity employed to assist the war effort."

The 79-page catalogue, titled 'Per Ardua Libertas' - which means Liberty Through Adversity - was put together especially for American intelligence officers in 1942.

Having just entered the war, the American group were keen to learn of MI9's covert techniques.

Fewer than 100 of the precious catalogues were printed.

The rare catalogue will go under the hammer at Bonhams Gentleman's Library sale on January 30.

Rob Watson: When a Son Tells His Gay Dad, 'You Are Not My Mom'

I always figured there were certain hateful statements that my sons would make, especially ones that say I am inadequate. Such statements would come out in the future, during some angsty teenage scrap as I'm laying down the law and they're going for my jugular. My sister told me once, "If your kids don't shout out that they hate you at least a few times, then you aren't doing it right." Up until now, no such shout-out has occurred.

But one of the statements I feared was finally delivered, though it did not come as part of a calculated gotcha exchange. It came at the worst possible moment.

It was Thanksgiving evening, and dinner at my sister's house was almost ready. We were preparing to get to the table when my younger son appeared in the dining room and announced, "Jason just threw up!" I rushed upstairs to find my 10-year-old son crying over a mess that smelled like rancid juice.

I rushed him to the nearby bathroom as the stomach convulsions continued, and we experienced one of what would be many rounds of this illness episode. It was a horrible event, because there was nothing I could do for him but hold him while his body expelled the contents of his stomach. He cried and gasped and tried to recover.

"I am so so sorry," I whispered as his body tensed again.

"I want my mommy," he cried out, bursting into tears!

Say what?!

Several things went through my mind. My son is hypoglycemic, and when his blood sugar drops, he becomes completely irrational until food is back in his system This effect is exacerbated by his hypersensitivity, which is a result of having been exposed to heroin in the womb. He was already hungry, given that we were about to have dinner, and now his system was even more depleted. However, his comment was still concerning, because there is no such person in his life, nor has there ever been. He has been in my arms since he was 4 days old and weighed 4 lbs. There was a birth mother, but she was not a "mommy" and has never been there for him.

I tried to ignore the comment, and I pet him gently. I had to say something, though, and I heard myself muttering, "You have a daddy, and I am here, boo."

He looked up and cried, "But you aren't my mom!"

Now I was at the emotional edge. It is horrible being in a situation in which you want to care for your child but are completely helpless, but then to be marked as inadequate, as well, was too much for me.

"You have a dad, boo, not a mom," I said. "I do all your mom things for you. A mom just does what I do but would be a girl. I am your mom. Try to relax. You will feel better in a minute."

He looked at me again and cried out, "I want Papa!" Papa is my ex and was my co-parent for the boys. He chose to keep his distance from us over the past year.

"Oh, great," I thought sarcastically. "That is so much better. Kill me. Just kill me now."

The fact was that nothing could magically give my son comfort in that moment. I was not going to be able to make that happen. He knew it, and I knew it, and in his hypoglycemic irrationality he was lashing out in any way his mind could muster.

For him, the discomfort would ease in a few hours, his body would get peaceful, and he would sink into my embraces. He would feel safe, back in control and tired. For me, the drama would continue: My younger son also got hit with the illness, so my new partner Jim took care of one child in one bathroom while I took care of the other child in another bathroom. I ended up spending a sleepless night, at times with both kids at the toilet bowl, praying for some inspiration that would help me put an end to their misery. But I knew it just had to run its course.

The entire adventure is now a thing for our family history book, under "Thanksgiving Disasters," but still I felt the nagging residual pang of sadness over my son's declaration. I finally talked to him recently, and the conversation affirmed that he is not feeling that he is lacking anything with only male parents in our family.

"Where did that idea come from?" I asked.

He explained that one of his school friends talks to him "in private" and tries to tell him that he needs his "real" mother, and this friend has tried to get him on sites to "find" her. This same friend is also convinced that my son has Asian heritage and has been urging him to research that. Even if my son were truly interested, it is a useless exercise. He is Mexican; we know where his ancestors come from and have studied them. I have pictures of his birth mother and am in contact with her family. She is not at a computer or anywhere to be found or communicated with; she is still on the streets, and his birth father is in prison.

Those who oppose gay marriage and gay families decry the pro-gay socialization of the children of gay parents and cite this as their chief concern around the issue. In my opinion, the pro-gay side too often capitulates and assures our opponents that no such socialization is mandated or desired. Meanwhile, those with an anti-gay agenda double down and hit back harder with their own propaganda. This inspires children, like this friend of my son, to attempt to undermine the love we have in our families, with complete and utter disregard for the consequences of their actions. I do not believe that children of all ages should be privy to the intimate details of adult relationships, but they do need enough information to know that many family structures exist, thrive and are equal to their own. Children should know that the fact that one child has a female parent whom they love does not mean that another child's male parent is not equally worthwhile.

As it turns out, despite not having a female parent in the house, both my sons are fully content and grounded. They have their daddy, and according to them, that is good enough.

China's Lenovo sees RIM as M&A option, CFO says

TORONTO (Reuters) - A senior Lenovo executive said on Thursday that the Chinese computer maker may consider Research in Motion as a takeover target, sending the Blackberry maker's shares up 2 percent just a week before it launches a make-or-break line of redesigned smartphones.

But Lenovo, which vaulted into the personal computer market with its 2005 purchase of IBM's PC division, would face formidable hurdles if it tried to buy a company that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper once described as a national "crown jewel." The Chinese company would also encounter tough regulatory scrutiny in Washington, cybersecurity experts say.

Lenovo, on track to become the world's largest PC maker, has held talks with RIM and its bankers about various combinations or strategic ventures, its chief financial officer, Wong Wai Ming, said on Thursday.

"We are looking at all opportunities - RIM and many others," Wong told Bloomberg in an interview at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. "We'll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along."

A spokesman for Lenovo said Wong was asked about RIM by the Bloomberg journalist and that Wong was speaking broadly about Lenovo's M&A strategy.

CRUCIAL JUNCTURE

RIM, once a pioneer in the smartphone industry, has struggled in recent years as its aging line-up of devices have ceded market share to Apple Inc's iPhone and devices based on Google Inc's Android operating system.

RIM hopes its new touch-screen and keyboard devices, powered by its new BlackBerry 10 operating system, will help it claw back some of the lost ground. Optimism surrounding the launch has powered the stock higher in recent weeks.

Last May the Waterloo, Ontario-based company announced a far-reaching strategic review under which it was expected to examine all options, from software licensing deals to an outright sale of the company.

Earlier this week, RIM shares surged to a 13-month high after Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said RIM might consider strategic alliances with other companies after next week's BlackBerry 10 launch.

In an interview with a German newspaper on Monday, Heins said RIM's ongoing strategic review could lead to the sale of its handset business or the licensing of its software to rival smartphone companies.

Even so, analysts expressed skepticism about a Lenovo bid.

"Anybody who's serious about buying a company doesn't go talking it up... It sounds to me like a comment made more for publicity's sake than a serious approach for RIM," said Charter Equity analyst Ed Snyder. "It is a very long shot at the best.'

NET BENEFIT TEST

Any bid for RIM would face a rigorous review by the Ottawa to determine whether the deal would bring a "net benefit" to Canada. The Investment Canada Act gives the government the authority to kill deals that could harm Canadian interests or threaten the country's national security.

In response to the comments by Heins, Canada's Industry Minister Christian Paradis told Reuters earlier this week that Canada may even go to the extent of reviewing a sale of RIM's handset business if such a deal was proposed.

"Research in Motion has made an important contribution to information and communications technology in Canada, a sector that is so important to the Canadian economy. We hope they continue to do so well into the future," Paradis said in an emailed response to the Lenovo comments on Thursday.

Lenovo's acquisition trail over the past few years, such as the purchase of Germany's Medion in 2011 and IBM's PC business in 2005, has sparked market talk that it could be interested in handset makers such as RIM and Nokia Oyj.

Lenovo executives have denied on separate occasions last year that there were such plans.

Cybersecurity experts said Lenovo would likely go up against tough U.S. government scrutiny as well since the Defense Department and other agencies rely on the Blackberry, which is considered more secure than other smartphones.

Should Lenovo acquire RIM, it could lose a major client - the U.S. government - as U.S. officials would be reluctant to use products owned by a Chinese company due to national security concerns, analysts say.

"A potential acquisition of RIM by Lenovo would raise a number of important security issues," said Michael Wessel, a Commissioner on the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, appointed by Congress.

"Government employees are one of the largest users of RIM's BlackBerry products and the security of their communications has to be of paramount concern," said Wessel, adding that he was speaking on behalf of himself and not the Commission.

After the comments from Lenovo, a RIM spokesman said the company had nothing new to report on its strategic review.

RIM shares closed 2.2 percent higher at $17.74 on Thursday the Nasdaq. The Toronto-listed shares closed 2.9 percent higher at C$17.80. RIM is a volatile stock, and moves of 3 percent and more are not uncommon.

Its shares are down almost 90 percent from an all-time high of over $148 in 2008, but the stock has rallied in the last four months as the launch of the BlackBerry 10 devices nears. The company's shares have nearly tripled in value since dipping as low as $6.22 in late September.

Lenovo's shares fell 2.73 percent in Hong Kong during Friday trade, after closing 6.6 percent higher in the previous session.

Tuxedo Stan, cat who ran for mayor of Halifax battling kidney cancer

HALIFAX - A cat who gained world-wide fame when he ran for mayor of Halifax is battling a serious illness.

Owner Hugh Chisholm says Tuxedo Stan is resting at home after undergoing treatment for kidney cancer at a veterinary college in Charlottetown.

Chisholm says Tuxedo Stan was admitted to hospital this week after the discovery of a large mass in his abdomen, which turned out to be a cancerous tumour on his left kidney.

Chisholm says the 2 1/2 year old, black and white cat will continue treatment for renal lymphoma, a type of cancer that is not uncommon in older cats.

He says Tuxedo Stan is receiving hundreds of messages of support through his Facebook and website page from fans all over the world.

The black and white cat ran in last fall's municipal election to raise awareness about the plight of stray cats in the city, a campaign that was endorsed by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and CNNs Anderson Cooper.

Vine Just Made Twitter A Stronger Social Network

Vine, in case you missed it, is a standalone iOS app from Twitter that lets users create short, 6-second videos that run on a loop. Users record by holding their thumb against the screen, and stop by releasing. The short clips can then be threaded together and shared on Vine itself, Twitter or even Facebook. Here’s how a silly video-sharing app (which has been done before, by the way) makes Twitter a stronger social network. Content Generation Since Twitter launched, it’s never had a non-text platform for media creation. Sure, you can take photos within the app, and Twitter tapped Aviary to add Instagram-like filters to that process, but this is Twitter’s first standalone product that lets users share in some way other than a tweet. Twitter is a network based around media. Despite its brevity by nature, a lot of content passes through Twitter’s network, including, but not limited to, pictures, videos, websites, etc. The vast majority of that content is not Twitter’s, though it’s that same content that places such a high value on Twitter’s ad revenue stream through Promoted Tweets, trends, etc. Rather than let Facebook’s Instagram push all the juicy content through Twitter’s real-time network, the company has decided to build its own, new Instagram. Vine is Instagram for video. This has been done before by companies like Socialcam and Viddy, but the numerous companies who’ve dipped their toes in the cinematic pool have found the water a bit chilly. Twitter, a trusted and massive brand, is sure to pick up more of an instant user base, thus making Vine more attractive to even more new users. No one likes an empty room, and every video-sharing app until now has been just that. Creation Vs. Consumption Twitter’s ads are valuable because of the number of eyes on its network at any given time. Eyes come for the content. Sometimes that ends up being tweets (usually about real-time, live events). Sometimes it’s pictures from Instagram or videos from YouTube. And then, of course, there are the links to wonderful articles (sometimes about technology). When Instagram turned off Twitter Cards integration, essentially eliminating Twitter’s ability to embed Instagram photos directly into the stream, a huge chunk of Twitter’s visual appeal went out the window. Subway sandwich chain sued over 11-inch "Footlongs"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Australian teenager's picture of a Subway "Footlong" sandwich next to a tape measure has gone viral and inspired three lawsuits in the United States.

The lawsuits, one filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, a second in New Jersey Superior Court, Burlington County, and the third in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, each claims restaurant franchise sells sandwiches that are an inch short of a foot.

Given the millions of subs sold each year in the United States, damages could be more than $5 million, said Thomas Zimmerman, an attorney for the plaintiffs in the Chicago case.

"This is no different than buying a dozen eggs and getting 11," Zimmerman said. "You're buying a dozen inches and only getting 11."

The lawsuits, which are seeking class-action status, are also suing for compensatory damages and injunctive relief for deceptive advertising against Subway sandwich shops and Subway's parent company, Doctor's Associates Inc.

"We have redoubled our efforts to ensure consistency and correct length in every sandwich we serve," Subway spokeswoman Alison Goldberg said in a statement. "Our commitment remains steadfast to ensure that every Subway Footlong sandwich is 12 inches at each location worldwide."

Subway Australia, responding to the photo posted on Subway's Facebook fanpage, had said that said the Footlong was a registered trademark that was "not intended to be a measurement of length."

Legal experts said Subway may argue that the average length of the Footlong is 12 inches and that only some fall short.
