Editorial: Google Glass contest elicits mild uses for wild tech

Editorial Google Glass contest underlines mediocre uses for brilliant tech

Google's #ifihadglass contest advertises for "bold, creative individuals" to start carrying pre-production builds of Glass later this year. Since most people flatter themselves as dauntless and inspired, Google's challenge casts a wide net and applications are piling into Twitter. The contest apparently also seeks prosperous individuals willing to pay $1,500 for the prize, plus travel expense to pick it up. There might be good fiscal reasons for Google's parsimony, but I can't help noting that the $12 million of revenue generated by eager beta testers represents five-thousandths of 1 percent of the company's market cap, or one-tenth of a percent of its liquid cash.

Putting aside whatever demographic-shaping is in play, the more interesting question is whether Google will find its desired 8,000 bold creative types. The applications do not foretell blazing originality among foaming early adopters. If there is a depressing strain of mediocrity in the #ifihadglass Twitter stream, perhaps it speaks less to human limitation and more to intrinsic constraints of the device as it is currently understood.

(AP) ? World powers offered broader concessions than ever to Iran in attempts Wednesday to keep alive diplomatic channels that seek to rein in the Islamic Republic's nuclear program and prevent it from building an atomic weapon.

The offer was hailed by Saeed Jalili, Iran's top official at diplomatic talks in Kazakhstan, who said it represented a "turning point" by world powers to compromise on Tehran's uranium enrichment program after years of delicate negotiations that nearly dissolved last June.

The proposal allows Iran to keep a limited amount of highly enriched uranium ? but not make any more ? stops short of demanding the full shutdown of an underground nuclear facility, and offers to remove some trade sanctions that have hurt Iran's economy.

Still, a senior U.S. official said, crippling sanctions on Iran's oil and financial industries would remain in place as negotiations continue. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks more candidly.

The latest offer marked a small but significant shift from earlier, harder-line proposals that prompted Iran to dig in its heels amid fears that an arms race in neighboring states could sow yet more instability in the already turbulent Mideast. Israel has repeatedly hinted its readiness to strike Iranian nuclear facilities ? a military venture the United States likely would be dragged into.

The new offer also is expected to force Iran to respond with a reasonable plan of its own ? or be seen as a recalcitrant negotiator unwilling to compromise.

The proposal "was more realistic than before and had tried to get closer to the Iranian viewpoint in some cases," Jalili told reporters at the end of two days of negotiations in Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty. "We consider this positive ? although there is a long distance to reach the suitable point."

British Foreign Minister William Hague called the talks "useful" and said the new proposal aimed "to build confidence on both sides and move negotiations forward."

"I look forward to further progress," Hague said in a statement.

Iran maintains it has the right under international law to enrich uranium to 20 percent ? a level that can quickly be elevated into use for nuclear warheads. Tehran claims it needs that level of enriched uranium for reactor fuel and medical isotopes, and has signaled it does not intend to stop. U.N. nuclear inspectors last week confirmed Iran has begun a major upgrade of its program at the country's main uranium enrichment site.

Iran also insists, as a starting point, that world powers must recognize the republic's right to enrich uranium, and Jalili repeated Wednesday that Tehran must be able to enrich to 20 percent.

"Whatever we need, we will of course pursue that ? whether it is 5 percent or 20 percent," Jalili said. "It is important to us to have the 20 percent."

However, that remains a red line to negotiators from the world powers ? the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany ? who put their continued demand that Iran end any uranium enrichment that nears or reaches 20 percent at the heart of the new offer.

The senior U.S. official said Iran would be required to restrict its current stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium but, in a new development, would be allowed to keep enough to fuel a research reactor in Tehran. Also, Iran would have to suspend operations at its underground nuclear facility at Fordo ? and make it difficult to restart it quickly ? but would no longer be required to fully shut it down.

In return, the official said, the U.S. and EU would lift a number of unspecified sanctions on Iran, which was hit with harsh trade restrictions last year in Western hopes they would force Tehran to bend on its nuclear program. Additionally, the U.N. Security Council and the EU would impose no new nuclear sanctions against Iran.

However, the hardest-hitting sanctions ? on Iran's oil and financial industries ? will remain in place during the negotiations, the official said. The tough sanctions have caused unemployment and inflation in Iran to skyrocket, while depressing its daily oil output and value of its currency, the rial.

There was no deadline on when the new offer might expire, but the official urged Iran to respond quickly because "time is not on their side in many ways."

"There is a cost to Iran for every day that they wait to solve this problem," the U.S. official said. "And they will keep paying those costs, and the cost will go up."

The official bristled at the suggestion that the offer represents a softer negotiating stance toward Iran, characterizing it instead as a fair attempt to help build trust between the two sides.

"What we've asked of Iran is rather extensive and the constraints that we have suggested are quite fulsome," the U.S. official said. "So I would not characterize it as a softening of position. ...The overall effect of it is quite substantial."

The offer appeared to energize Iran's negotiation efforts: Their diplomats sought out direct talks with more Western officials than previously, although not with the United States. And Iranian negotiators quickly agreed to hold expert-level talks on March 18 in Istanbul to hash out the technical details of the deal, followed by another round of high-level discussions starting April 5 in Almaty.

"I hope the Iranians are looking positively on the proposals we put forward," said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is leading the negotiations. "I believe in looking at what the results are."

The U.S. diplomats in Almaty now head to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel, where they will brief allies on the negotiations' progress. The new offer is likely to frustrate Israel in particular, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Iran may not respond to anything but tougher sanctions ? and, potentially, military force.

Iran "doesn't seem to seek an end to its military nuclear program," Netanyahu said at a meeting with Sri Lanka's foreign minister. "Like North Korea, it continues to defy all the international standards. I believe that this requires the international community to ratchet up its sanctions and make clear that if this continues there will also be a credible military sanction. I think no other means will make Iran obey the wishes of the international community."

Some Republicans also believe the Obama administration has been too soft on Iran. U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois argued for even more economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.

"History shows that appeasement is expensive and highly unlikely to succeed with evil regimes like Iran," he said in a statement. "No sanctions relief should be provided to Iran until the regime complies with its international obligations."

In Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said it's hoped diplomacy will end the impasse because it would be the "right" and "reasonable" solution.

"But at the same time, we are very tough regarding Iran's nuclear weapons issue," Fabius said.

Jason Boland to make tour stop in Goliad

  • IF YOU GO

  • ??WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday

??WHERE: Schroeder Hall, 12516 Farm-to-Market Road 622, Goliad

    ??COST: $12 advance, $15 door

    ??FOR MORE INFO: SchroederDanceHall.com, 361-573-7002.

Jason Boland has traveled a long road since his whiskey-soaked, stoner days of pining over a "Rich, Young, Dumb Nymphomaniac."

While he's a sure match for a boat party, midnight back road cruises - and heavens yes, Schroeder Hall - the Oklahoma native has done some growing up.

From the Houston Livestock Show, Boland chatted with Get Out about his new album out in May, writing music with meaning and staying humble.

HOW WAS WORKING WITH SHOOTER JENNINGS ON THE NEW ALBUM, 'DARK AND DIRTY MILE'?

He's great. You need a certain air for it. I knew he possessed the knowledge we needed when we got in the studio: how to set the mikes and get the vibe. He's a piano player as well, so he's good with a range of songs. He's personal and down to earth. It was a smooth, organic experience.

We recorded it in Austin down at Cedar Creek and did some work at 12th Street Sound.

'RANCHO ALTO' SEEMED TO STICK UP FOR THE UNDERDOG. WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU WANT TO CONVEY WITH THIS ALBUM?

I don't think I intentionally go to say something. I write most of the songs we do as I experience life.

Sometimes, you find old songs that fit what you're doing. You tell them (your audience) different things in different songs. With all of our records, we try to take them on a ride of everything.

There's a lot of speaking for the downtrodden. There's already a lot of songs about how good it is to drive around, listen to music or party at the lake. We're the type of guys who gravitate toward the tradition of Merle Haggard or Johnny Cash - to have some form of social issue.

HOW DO YOU STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR ROOTS?

Touring keeps you humble, period. You go to new places. They don't know you. There's no special treatment. Even in some places where you 'think they ought to know who you are,' it's a big world out there.

If everything else is going right, you'll blow an axle. We've done it on trailers. We burned a tag axle last time we were heading east. We stayed in Longview, and I had to fly to Auburn to do a show acoustic. Then I rented a car and drove to Atlanta to do a show acoustic before the band caught up.

Hurricane Sandy closed down sold-out shows in Washington and New York.

It teaches you to roll with the punches.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE CURRENT STATE OF COUNTRY MUSIC?

Pop music - the stuff for 14-year-olds - people in their 20s and 30s have always called that bad. I don't think anything has changed.

When I first started getting into music, it was really cool to get into Jerry Jeff, Gary P. Nunn, Ray Wylie and the guys who we wanted to find out where it came from.

Now this day and age, it seems like they've already started to emulate pop: "We've heard you, now on to the next."

We try to stay relevant and push ourselves and make better music than we did when we were young. People heard the energy, the angst and the vitality of it, then they followed us through all the years and journey we've been on.

It's going on 14 years. We just now recorded an album basically the way we recorded "Pearl Snaps." It was straight to tape. It's not enhanced or pitch-shifted, not pieced together. The same original four of us and now Nick Worley with us on fiddle and mandolin - the fact that we can still get together and record music is pretty cool.

I'd rather it sound like this than everything else that's out right now.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FUTURE OF TEXAS COUNTRY?

I don't see anything but it to keep getting bigger. The main thing that keeps anything going in a music scene, art scene or food scene is the people. The people in Texas are proud of their music and the Okies from the north. ...

This scene is always going to be great and have tons of bands and tons of bars and you can go see anything - western swing, singer/songwriters, rock 'n' roll, southern, four-piece bands - it all falls under the umbrella of being original and rootsy.

WHAT'S THE NICEST THING ANYONE'S EVER SAID ABOUT YOUR MUSIC?

This last album, "Rancho Alto," we got Country Music Album of the Year, from the Lone Star Music Awards. I believe that's still voted on by the fans online.

You think that'd be all the younger bands names. To be in it this long and our last album to get this award, that's one of the great ones.

Or when someone says the music does this or got them through something. That's why everybody puts it out there originally. You just want to put out a song that resonates with people.

IS SONGWRITING THERAPEUTIC FOR YOU?

They all come about from some situation. It's also just as important to capture something that inspires you in a good mood.

It's very easy to sit down with a guitar and start complaining. When the sun is shining, it's easier to get out and throw the football.

They all take grabbing their own inspiration in their own way. I've always been able to write tragedies and darker songs, but now for example, I got married June 11, and my wife has been an inspiration for a lot newer and lighter side of songwriting: "Lucky I Guess," "Only One," but also "Between 11 to 2"

THROUGH THE HARD TIMES AND THE GOOD, WHAT KEEPS YOU WRITING MUSIC?

It is naturally what I gravitated toward: creative writing. This is just a way I found my niche in creative writing. I wrote a few songs and people enjoyed them. So you sit around and keep trying to be honest with yourself.

Mike McClure, Bob Childers, Tom Skinner, Red Dirt Rangers - I think the spirit of all of it is just be yourself and something interesting will be created in the process. You might even amaze yourself.

I'm amazed we still get to do it. I listen to old recordings, and I don't know what people were listening to. Maybe they heard the angst and the passion. Every album I think we sound better and better. We're at nine albums now.

GOT ANYTHING PLANNED FOR THE SHOW AT SCHROEDER?

If people want to see the real thing still standing, go out to Schroeder Hall. It's an oasis out there, just like it ought to be. It's what it should be. There's not a lot of them left.

Anonymous Hack Of Bank Of America - Business Insider

Anonymous hackers have released 14 gigabytes of information allegedly related to Bank of America and a web intelligence firm it hired to spy on hackers and social activists last year.

Emails detail how employees of TEKSystems actively watched hacker forums and social media sites for any remotely relevant pieces of "intelligence."

The leak includes a list of more than 10,000 words, phrases, and references ? everything from "jihad" to "keg stand" to "I Wish That I Had Duck Feet" ? that was used to match for entries on forums like anonops and sites including Twitter (including Tweetdeck),?pastebin, Facebook,?and various blogs.

A press release from Par:AnoIA (aka Anonymous Intelligence Agency) states that the data "clearly shows that the research was sloppy, random and valueless."

But the emails include "Daily Cyber Threat Highlights" that list events and stories from all over the world.

And the data dump adds a new element to what is known about public and private entities surveilling protestors of Occupy Wall Street.

We knew that web intelligence firm Ntrepid mapped online relationships between anarchists and the leaders of Occupy. These documents reveal that TEKSystems assembled "intelligence" reports on both Occupy and hackers for (at least) the first 11 months of 2012.

Anonymous insists it was not a hack:

"[T]he data was not acquired by a hack but because it was stored on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs. Even more alarming, the data was retrieved from an Israeli server in Tel Aviv."

"As a bonus," the hackers released 4.8 gigabytes of data containing the salary information top executives around the world, including Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

What The Hell Is Wrong With NASCAR? ? NYU Local

Contrary to popular belief, there was a time when NASCAR racing was one of the most popular sports in the United States. Sunday was the automobile Sabbath and fathers would take their children to the track to watch the famous drivers of the day. That didn?t last for too long.

As problems arose from its safety and culture, the sport has become increasingly distant from mainstream American sporting culture.?NASCAR fell off the viewing pedestal for a good chunk of Americans, as we turned on the Super Bowl and World Series instead of the Daytona 500.

But all is not lost for the sport where cars drive around in a circle for a few hours. Here are some elements of the sport which need to be fixed before NASCAR moves back up to the upper American sports echelon.

Saturday?s horrific accident speaks volumes about how dangerous auto racing is. On the last lap in the DRIVE4COPD, the opening race of the Nationwide Series (NASCAR?s Triple A affiliate) at Daytona International Speedway, there was a crash which involved at least 12 cars and injured 33 spectators, some as far away as the upper deck. In the 1987 Winston 500 at Talladega Motor Speedway in Alabama, Bobby Allison had an accident which at the time was seen as the worst accident in NASCAR history. Saturday?s accident takes the cake. Kyle Larson?s 32 car went airborne and broke the catch fence that separates the cars from the grandstand. The engine of his car ended up in the stands.

There are dangers to drivers in auto racing but this illustrates the danger of being a spectator at a race. If NASCAR wants to prevent these types of accidents, then it needs to install stronger catch fences around its tracks or move fans farther away from the action. An example of this method is seen in Japanese baseball stadiums, where there are fences along the stands to prevent hard hit balls and thrown bats from reaching the spectators. While these measures may detract from the experience of being close to a race (or game), it will keep fans safer and prevent incidents like Saturday?s from happening often.

Another issue in terms of the racing is the track selection. There are only two road courses (courses that contain more turns, both left and right) on NASCAR?s schedule. Many Americans do not like watching cars make left turns for three hours. Road courses cause much more drama and intrigue. NASCAR could add more road races to their schedule to breakup the left-hand turn monopoly.

NASCAR only appeals to a certain demographic. The vast majority of drivers across all NASCAR series are from America. If NASCAR would like to have a broader appeal, then it should have a more diverse driver pool. There are no minority drivers on NASCAR?s top two circuits (Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series). The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (third tier) will have Darrell Wallace Jr. as the fourth black driver in NASCAR history. If Wallace Jr. succeeds, then he would be essential to engendering connections with minorities. If he does not succeed, then NASCAR needs to reevaluate its strategy in terms of branching out to these communities. According to NASCAR Fan Base Demographics from 2010, NASCAR?s largest fan base is in the South at 41%, which has a high white population. That?s not a strategy for success anymore.

In an effort to reach a broader appeal, NASCAR should focus on reaching the corners of the country or maybe going beyond. NASCAR could hold races outside of the United States in places like Montreal (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve) or Mexico City (Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez) in order to promote the sport to a different audience.

Also, auto racing faces a serious battle with being energy efficient. Cars need gas to run. Eco-friendly people do not feel an alliance to a sport which they claim is killing their earth. NASCAR is distancing itself from a wave of fans who care about the environment. What NASCAR could do, which would be revolutionary, is try to develop a car which runs on hybrid power or entirely on battery. It would make for some interesting changes in pit strategy, car shape and possibly the type of racing but it would generate more avenues to reach fans.

The sponsorship deals it currently has in place with Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota could lead to innovative science in alternative forms of auto racing. NASCAR could also add a fourth major branch to its series in which cars need to be entirely independent of gas. This would cause positive publicity for the sport in its effort to go green.

Everything has its flaws. NASCAR is seen as the dominant racing league in the United States. However, it is falling far behind other sports, in terms of national recognition and popularity. And, while it is not too far behind, the sport does not want to keep drifting backwards before it is out of the race. It just needs to catch up with the times first.

Greens to push dual citizenship issue - The Local

The German opposition is pushing for a law allowing people from Turkish and other non-EU backgrounds dual citizenship - as Turkish Prime Minister demanded Chancellor Angela Merkel give up her resistance to the idea.

Under current rules introduced in 2000, people born to a non-European Union family are allowed dual citizenships only as children. They must chose between nationalities before their 23rd birthday - or automatically lose their German passport.

?We've been demanding for a long time that this forced choice be abolished and we'll be bringing an initiative in the Bundesrat [upper house of parliament] to that effect,? Renate K?nast, head of the Green party parliamentary fraction told Die Welt newspaper on Monday.

K?nast said the obligatory choice at the age of 23 was unreasonable and a tough test of loyalty for young people from non-European immigrant backgrounds. The rule does not apply to children who have a parent from an EU country - they can retain dual citizenship.

?Dual citizenship is an expression of the diversity and openness of our society,? said K?nast, suggesting Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was behind the times with its opposition to non-EU dual citizenship.

?To deny that only shows how backward-looking the thinking of the CDU is," she said.

The initiative appears to be a clever bit of political manoeuvring by the opposition, which is keen to exploit its newly-won upper house majority and give Chancellor Angela Merkel as many headaches as possible in the five months to go before the general election.

K?nast's comments on dual citizenship came on the second day of Merkel's state visit to Turkey, where Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded the Chancellor abandon her opposition to dual citizenship.

The Greens' move also comes less than a week after the governing junior coalition partner the Free Democrats (FDP) catapulted the topic back into the headlines when Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger called for a change in the law.

By inserting the issue straight into the Bundesrat, the Green party and their allies the Social Democrats (SPD) could force the FDP to break ranks with their CDU coalition partner and support the initiative.

The path through the upper house is another way of getting the lower house Bundestag to address an issue. If the SPD, Greens and the Left party use their opposition majority to pass an initiative in the Bundesrat, it will automatically pass to the lower house for discussion.

Rich Kids Of Google Glass

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 5.56.04 PMYou know, I'm sort of jealous. Because I've eaten something like three?Po'boy sandwiches in the past three days, and every single time I've wondered, as I was eating, where the odd name Po' boy originated. But didn't want to take out my grubby phone during the meal to find out. I've also wondered whether this is a problem that Google Glass could solve ... "If I had Google Glass right now, I would already know that the term Po'boy originated in a New Orleans restaurant?owned by former streetcar workers Benny and Clovis Martin, who served the sandwiches to off duty street car workers (in Louisiana?dialect Po'boys) during a 1929 strike against the street car company." Guess the name stuck.

Cuba parliament gathers, will select president

(AP) ? Cuba's parliament reconvened Sunday with new membership and was expected to name Raul Castro to a new five-year-term as president. All were watching whether younger politicians might be tapped for other top leadership posts, providing hints of a possible future successor.

Castro fueled speculation on Friday when he talked of his possible retirement and suggested he has plans to resign at some point. It was unclear whether the 81-year-old leader was joking, but he promised his speech Sunday would be "interesting."

If a fresh face is named as one of his top deputies, it could indicate that his administration is settling on who might carry the country forward when those who fought in the 1959 revolution can no longer do so.

Raul Castro turns 82 this year and would be 86 when a new term ends. His top two lieutenants are also in their 80s.

"This National Assembly is important because it formally is going to govern the fate of the country for the next five years, which will be decisive for changing personnel ? what I call the intergenerational transition," said Arturo Lopez-Levy, a Cuban economist and analyst who lectures at the University of Denver. "The intergenerational transition cannot be put off any longer."

The 612 members of parliament are due to be sworn in during the morning and then pick a new National Assembly president for the first time in 20 years, as longtime chief Ricardo Alarcon was not on the ballot this year.

The assembly will also nominate the Council of State, Cuba's maximum governing body, which is made up of the president, a first vice president, five vice-presidents, a secretary and 23 other members.

The president also oversees the Council of Ministers, or Cabinet.

Castro has spoken in the past of implementing two-term limits for public officials up to and including the president, as well as the importance of grooming new leaders to take over from his graying generation.

This would be his second full term after formally assuming the presidency in 2008. He took over provisionally in 2006 when his elder brother, Fidel, was stricken with a life-threatening intestinal illness.

Raul Castro is about halfway through a program of key social and economic reforms that have already seen the expansion of private business activity, legalized home and car sales, an easing of restrictions on foreign travel and the handover of fallow state land to independent farmers.

Cuban state media said both Castros received a standing ovation when they arrived at a Havana convention center for Sunday's parliamentary gathering.

A photo posted online by the news agency Prensa Latina showed the brothers sitting next to each other at the assembly, along with first vice president Jose Ramon Machado Ventura.

Foreign media were not invited to the early parts of the gathering, but were promised access to its closing moments.

Italians vote in parliamentary elections

ROME (AP) ? Will Italy stay the course with painful economic reform? Or fall back into the old habit of profligacy and inertia? These are the stakes as Italy votes in a watershed parliamentary election Sunday and Monday that could shape the future of one of Europe's biggest economies.

Fellow EU countries and investors are watching closely, as the decisions that Italy makes over the next several months promise to have a profound impact on whether Europe can decisively put out the flames of its financial crisis. Greece's troubles in recent years were enough to spark a series of market panics. With an economy almost 10 times the size of Greece's, Italy is simply too big a country for Europe, and the world, to see fail.

Leading the electoral pack is Pier Luigi Bersani, a former communist who has shown a pragmatic streak in supporting tough economic reforms spearheaded by incumbent Mario Monti. On Bersani's heels is Silvio Berlusconi, the billionaire media mogul seeking an unlikely political comeback after being forced from the premiership by Italy's debt crisis. Monti, while widely credited with saving Italy from financial ruin, is trailing badly as he pays the price for the suffering caused by austerity measures.

Then there's the wild card: comic-turned-politician Beppe Grillo, whose protest movement against the entrenched political class has been drawing tens of thousands to rallies in piazzas across Italy. If his self-styled political "tsunami" sweeps into Parliament with a big chunk of seats, Italy could be in store for a prolonged period of political confusion that would spook the markets.

While a man of the left, Bersani has shown himself to have a surprising amount in common with the center-right Monti ? and the two have hinted at the possibility of teaming up in a coalition. Bersani was Monti's most loyal backer in Parliament during the respected economist's tenure at the head of a technocratic government. And in ministerial posts in previous center-left governments, Bersani fought hard to free up such areas of the economy as energy, insurance and banking services.

But it's uncertain that Monti will be able muster the votes needed to give Bersani's Democratic Party a stable majority in both houses of Parliament.

"Forming a government with a stable parliamentary alliance may prove tricky after elections," said Eoin Ryan, an analyst with IHS Global Insight. "A surge in support for anti-austerity parties is raising chances of an indecisive election result and post-vote political instability."

Another factor is turnout. Usually some 80 percent of the 50 million eligible voters go to the polls but experts are predicting many will stay away in anger, hurting mainstream parties.

When Berlusconi stepped down in November 2011, newspapers were writing his political obituary. At 76, blamed for mismanaging the economy and disgraced by criminal allegations of sex with an underage prostitute, the billionaire media baron appeared finished as a political force.

But Berlusconi has proven time and again ? over 20 years at the center of Italian politics ? that he should never be counted out.

The campaign strategy that has allowed him to become a contender in these elections is a simple one: please the masses by throwing around cash.

Berlusconi has promised to give back an unpopular property tax imposed by Monti as part of austerity measures. Even his purchase of start striker Mario Balotelli for his AC Milan soccer team was widely seen as a ploy to buy votes. Berlusconi has also appealed to Italy's right-wing by praising Italy's former fascist dictator Benito Mussolini during a ceremony commemorating Holocaust victims.

The most recent polls show Bersani in the lead with 33 percent of the vote, against 28 percent for Berlusconi's coalition with the populist Northern League. Grillo's 5 Star movement was in a surprise third place, with 17 percent support, while Monti's centrist coalition was notching 13 percent. The COESIS poll of 6,212 respondents had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percent.

Pollster Renato Mannheimer said among his biggest clients heading into the elections were foreign banks seeking to gauge whether to hold or sell Italian bonds.

"They are worried mostly about the return of Berlusconi," Mannheimer said.

Uncertainty over the outcome of the vote has pushed the Milan stock exchange down in the days running up to the vote and bumped up borrowing costs, as investors express concern that Italy may back down from a reform course to pull the country out of recession.

Mannheimer said many undecided voters ? who comprise around one-third of the total electorate ? identify with the center-right, and that may help Berlusconi. He said that the undecided vote may also tilt heavily toward Grillo's protest movement.

The professorial Monti looked uncomfortable at first as a candidate but has recently warmed to the role. Like the others, he has not shied away from name calling, warning that Berlusconi is a "charlatan" and saying his return would be "horrific."

Bond analyst Nicholas Spiro said the election "will deliver the most important verdict on the eurozone's three-year-old austerity focused policies."

But he is betting on a period of political instability after the vote.

"An upset victory by Mr. Berlusconi may be markets' nightmare scenario," he said, "but the prospects for a stable and harmonious Bersani-Monti coalition government ? still the mostly likely outcome in our view ? are bleak."

Head to head: NVIDIA's Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i

NVIDIA Tegra 4

Chipmaker shows its 2013 wares at Mobile World Congress

For NVIDIA in 2013 (so far at least), the conversation revolves around Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i. The gist is that Tegra 4 is more powerful of the two, with more GPU cores than Tegra 4i (72 versus 60) and boasting the ARM 15 processor as part of NVIDIA's 4+1 quad-core package. It's a little bigger and more expensive than Tegra 4i, which dispenses with a dozen GPU cores and integrates the i500 LTE modem onto the die. Tegra 4i also uses an ARM9-r4, which while not quite as bad-ass as the ARM15 can very much still hold its own thanks to the optimization from ARM and NVIDIA.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

We got an up-close look at the new systems today, on the eve of Mobile World Congress, in a series of relatively controlled scenarios on test hardare, including NVIDIA's own "Phoenix" reference phone. And it's tough not to let NVIDIA's enthusiasm for its new line rub off on you. On paper, anyway, and comparing to the best of what's currently available -- which means Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 and its own Tegra 3 -- the next generation of Tegra devices looks damned promising.

Feds seize over $17 million in fake NFL goods, Super Bowl tickets

POSTED: Saturday, February 23, 2013 - 9:00pm

UPDATED: Saturday, February 23, 2013 - 9:04pm

Score one for the feds.

An investigation encompassing everything from fake NFL game jerseys to counterfeit Super Bowl tickets ended with more than $17 million worth of items seized and 41 people arrested, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The federal agency began its probe -- which it dubbed "Operation Red Zone" in reference to the area between the 20-yard line and goal line for a football team's offense -- on September 1, 2012, and wrapped it up on February 6.

ICE special agents, U.S. Postal Inspection Service members and state and local police officers nationwide conducted the investigation, in conjunction with the NFL and other top sports leagues.

They targeted international shipments of merchandise while also focusing on places where such items might be stored or sold, such as warehouses, stores, flea markets, street vendors and online vendors.

By the time they were done, authorities had seized $17.3 million in unlicensed jerseys, hats, T-shirts, jackets and other souvenirs, ICE said.

Plus, federal agents shut down 313 websites on which counterfeit merchandise was hawked. "The seized websites are now in the custody of the federal government," according to the ICE press release.

The effort -- which included the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center -- also looked at counterfeit tickets, specifically for the Super Bowl, the NFL's championship game. This led to the confiscation of 168 tickets valued at more than $154,000.

Asia Global Energy India: WPS 2000

http://www.asiaglobalenergy.com/mwp.html Asia Global Energy has obtained the Asian license to a large scale waste remediation technology that produces valuable electricity and destroys over 1000 tons per day of Municipal Solid Waste. This Waste to Energy Technology is under license and was originally developed in the 1980s under the Reagan administration as part of a joint venture between Ensco and the United States Military. The technology was utilized to destroy US stockpiles of biological and chemical weapons in an attempt to meet US/USSR treaty commitments. Over the last 25 years, this technology has successfully remediated 22 toxic waste sites in North America, including a PCB site near Smithville, Ontario. Since 2000, there has been three energy producing components developed from waste heat in the certified remediation of municipal, agricultural and toxic waste: electricity, hydrogen and fresh water. The company remains committed to reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by converting municipal solid waste (MSW) to clean, reliable, renewable power, and by producing and trading carbon assets based on the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. Asia Global Energy is licensed to be a selling agent for this technology in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Our agreement ensures a percentage of the large revenue resulting from the sale, setup and operation of this Waste to Energy technology. Has evolution given humans unique brain structures?

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Humans have at least two functional networks in their cerebral cortex not found in rhesus monkeys. This means that new brain networks were likely added in the course of evolution from primate ancestor to human.

These findings, based on an analysis of functional brain scans, were published in a study by neurophysiologist Wim Vanduffel (KU Leuven and Harvard Medical School) in collaboration with a team of Italian and American researchers.

Our ancestors evolutionarily split from those of rhesus monkeys about 25 million years ago. Since then, brain areas have been added, have disappeared or have changed in function. This raises the question, 'Has evolution given humans unique brain structures?'. Scientists have entertained the idea before but conclusive evidence was lacking. By combining different research methods, we now have a first piece of evidence that could prove that humans have unique cortical brain networks.

Professor Vanduffel explains: "We did functional brain scans in humans and rhesus monkeys at rest and while watching a movie to compare both the place and the function of cortical brain networks. Even at rest, the brain is very active. Different brain areas that are active simultaneously during rest form so-called 'resting state' networks. For the most part, these resting state networks in humans and monkeys are surprisingly similar, but we found two networks unique to humans and one unique network in the monkey."

"When watching a movie, the cortex processes an enormous amount of visual and auditory information. The human-specific resting state networks react to this stimulation in a totally different way than any part of the monkey brain. This means that they also have a different function than any of the resting state networks found in the monkey. In other words, brain structures that are unique in humans are anatomically absent in the monkey and there no other brain structures in the monkey that have an analogous function. Our unique brain areas are primarily located high at the back and at the front of the cortex and are probably related to specific human cognitive abilities, such as human-specific intelligence."

The study used fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans to visualise brain activity. fMRI scans map functional activity in the brain by detecting changes in blood flow. The oxygen content and the amount of blood in a given brain area vary according to a particular task, thus allowing activity to be tracked.

Chicago bluesman Magic Slim dead at 75

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Guitarist Magic Slim, a mainstay of the Chicago blues scene who followed in the footsteps of such greats as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, died on Thursday at age 75, his manager said.

Slim, the son of Mississippi sharecroppers, gave up the piano and turned to guitar after losing his right pinky finger in a cotton gin accident at age 13. He died at a Philadelphia hospital where he had been under treatment for various ailments, manager Marty Salzman said.

A heavy smoker who suffered from emphysema and heart problems, Slim was forced by illness to cut short a tour with his band, the Teardrops, in late January, Salzman said.

Born Morris Holt in Torrence, Mississippi, Slim grew up on a farm and made his first trip to Chicago in 1955, starting off as the bass player for a friend and mentor known as Magic Sam, who lent the younger musician his nickname.

Slim cut his first record in 1966 and became a Chicago blues fixture in his own right, developing a guitar style that blended a distinct vibrato with a slide-guitar-like sound formed with his bare fingers against the strings.

Known for playing with picks on both the thumb and index finger of his right hand - a somewhat unusual technique, according to Salzman - the guitarist was recognized as much for his powerful, gruff vocals as his musicianship.

With more than 30 albums to his credit, Slim also was known for an encyclopedic mastery of the blues, Salzman said.

"There's probably not another bluesman who had quite the repertoire that Slim had," he said.

While Slim lived in recent years with his family in Nebraska, "Chicago was always like home to him," his manager said.

Tech Leaders Create Most Lucrative Science Prize In History

We live in a world where we have beaten most diseases and already live longer than we should

Oh yeah... beaten most disease? Give me a fucking break. We certainly nailed some big viruses, but those aren't diseases.

Let me know when you figure out how to cure something as simple as Migraine headaches. How about depression, we have 'treatments' but certainly no cures, and those treatments are a crapshoot. Maybe this drug works... oh no, well lets try this one... Yeah it works, but your heartrate doubled...

The simple fact of the matter is that the current state of 'medicine' is that your options for actually beating a disease are:
1. Take a vaccine for the cause before you actually get the disease (if a vaccine exists)
2. Take antibiotics if it is bacterial in nature. Hope that the infection hasn't caused irreversable damage
3. Take a knife and cut it out.
4. Sew it back up.

Everything else is basically palliative care. We are just now beginning to se the barest glimpse of genetic treatments, and you are considering most diseases beaten and that people live too long?

I know misanthropy is hip on slashdot, but that doesn't make you right.

Kim K. not quitting 'Keeping Up' after season 9

By The Hollywood Reporter staff

Kim Kardashian says she won't be quitting "Keeping Up" after season nine.

Despite reports to the contrary, fans will be able to keep up with?Kim Kardashian?for at least a few more years.

In a recent?DuJour?cover story, which features remarks from? The Hollywood Reporter's editorial director?Janice Min, Kardashian allegedly says that season nine of her hit E! reality show will be her last. The story indicates that Kardashian -- having signed on for the upcoming eighth and ninth seasons -- will not extend her contract beyond what she has already committed to. Multiple outlets picked up on the story, blasting headlines all over the Internet about Kardashian calling it quits on the hit franchise and with many suggesting that Kardashian?s beau,?Kanye West, is to blame.

Photos from THR: Inside Kardashian Inc.

?My boyfriend has taught me a lot about privacy,? she is quoted as saying. ?I?m ready to be a little less open about some things, like my relationships. I?m realizing everyone doesn?t need to know everything. I?m shifting my priorities.?

Kardashian now is disputing the reports, saying that the reality franchise remains her first priority but maintaining a noncommittal stance on what the future might bring.

?In the article, I was asked about continuing on with?'Keeping Up With the Kardashians,'?? she writes on her?official blog. ?As everyone knows, we are extremely proud of the show and all of us are staying on through at least season 10. The show remains to be my number 1 priority and it?s a big part of my life and I enjoy every moment of it.?

Photos from THR: I'm quitting the biz: 16 Hollywood retirements (and 'retirements')

She continues: ?I?m looking forward to the new season and beyond. The fact is that I have many goals that I still need to reach and accomplish and I (like so many of you) don?t know where my life will be in the next couple of years, but I?m looking forward to continuing this journey.?

Season eight of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"?began filming this month and will premiere in June. According to her interview with?DuJour, "KUWTK"?will not include any explicit ?baby stuff,? relating to the child she is expecting with West, and might or might not include her beau.

?We haven?t really gotten that far yet,? says Kardashian.
