I ask delegates on my Confident Public Speaking Skills courses to write their objectives for the day, plus their issues, concerns and worries about public speaking on post-it notes added to a poster.
Their thoughts include:
NERVES ? All eyes on me! ? Adrenaline rush ? PANIC ? Want to run! ? Mind going blank ? Feel nervous but excited ? Depends what the subject is ? Out of comfort zone ? Confort zone being stretched ?
We?ll look at why we get nervous when speaking in public, what nerves do to us physically and emotionally, and what we can do to minimise the ?nerves? and the ?panic? and encourage ?excited? instead.
Will I have time to prepare? ? Think out of the box! ? Do I know enough? ? I?ll forget what to say! ? I like to waffle, ramble and go off on a tangent ? Will I go on too long? ?
We?ll explore how to start off with clear aim and objectives, gather, structure and rehearse your presentation and use helpful speaking notes so you?ll have a good idea how long it should all take, keep yourself on track and stay focussed throughout.
I want to deliver a good last sentence ?
How you end your presentation will be one of their most lasting memories. We?ll look at what to include in your introduction and conclusion as well as the main body of the presentation.
