Baltimore mayor weighs in on ethics director

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says she thinks the City Council should be responsible for overseeing the city's ethics director.

The duty falls to a board on which Rawlings-Blake sits, but that panel hasn't met in years.

The Baltimore Sun (http://bsun.md/ZzwoJv) reports that Rawlings-Blake says the City Council should evaluate the director's performance, like it does for other city agencies. But a spokesman for City Council President Bernard "Jack" Young says the charter leaves that responsibility to the Board of Legislative Reference.

The ethics director is Avery Aisenstark, who says the board regularly monitors his work. The board is composed of the mayor, the city solicitor, law school deans at the University of Baltimore and Maryland, a City Councilman, the Johns Hopkins University president and the Enoch Pratt Free Library director.
