In a sluggish economy much like the one of late, running a successful small business is much like walking a tightrope.? Many business gurus put stock in formulating not just a business plan, but a strategic plan. A recent article in USA Today addresses this issue.
Many small businesses are founded with a business plan in place. Such plans outline the organization?s goals for the next year, 5 years, and 10 years. ?Let?s say the business plan gives an overview of your entire business, including financing, market analysis, personnel, and operations.? While, a strategic plan, on the other hand, ?addresses the mission, vision, values and objectives that lead to a successful company.? Although many small businesses establish mission and vision statements early on, the successful implementation of such concepts is especially challenging. While some professionals may advice a small business owner to hire someone to provide such strategic planning advice. This article suggests entrepreneurs think twice before shelling out the big bucks. ?Finding a good facilitator to help you design a strategic plan is advisable. However, no matter how how great the plan looks on paper, if you are not prepared to put the plan into action you could be wasting time and money.?
A strategic action plan is all about action?or so this author believes. And I agree. Why spend the money to hire a consultant to form a strategic plan only to disregard his or her findings because implementing the suggested changes would mean more time and money that you?re unwilling to part with.
For a strategic plan to work effectively, think of it as an action plan. Give yourself and your employees a timeframe?and stick to it! And be sure that the plan you develop is designed to fit your business, your staff, and you!
